The US embassies have orders to shoot anyone who attempts to attack or take over the embassy. It has been that way since the 1979 embassy take over in Tehran.

I've had it with this whole Islamic rubbish tbh. Basically shortly and sweetly put, they need to grow the **** up. They're acting like petulant little teenagers. Maybe its time to expel all known radical muslims from Western countries and bar any immigration from countries that have protested our freedom of speech in the last few days. Follow this up with economic sanctions and freezing of assets.

I think the west has been to nice with this rubbish, if they want an enemy they can have a proper enemy.

Actually the populations of many islamic countries are largely quasi-literate and ignorant. couple that with a deep Islamic faith and you have millions of puppets whose strings can be tweaked at will by an educated and charismatic extremist elite...

Consequently publishing cartoons that could be construed or twisted as blaspheming Mohammad is totally playing into these extremist's hands - further posting them like the French and Germans etc have done is like throwing petrol onto a fire!

Sure we have freedom of speech, but as the Chief Rabbi of the UK says: "The only way to have freedom from religious hatred is to exercise restraint. The question is : can we learn to respect what others hold holy?"

Are we in the west that arrogant that we would rather uphold a 'right' (one which we don't even follow ourselves!) than respect the fact that what might appear trivial to us is deeply insulting to another culture!!?

This story is pretty bizarre. It's been 4 months since those cartoons got published and only now we see these kind of events. It's completely over top.

OTOH, weren't we similarly infuriated by Ahma-prez holocaust denial? Don't we prosecute this? Don't we have this concept of "hate-crimes"?
I'm all for freedom of speech but it strikes me as slightly hypocrite to be infuriated by suggestions the freedom of speech should be limited to account for religious taboos. We've already been limiting it for other taboos. Some consistency is called for IMHO.

Yes, alot of people were upset, and asked for an apology from a government official who was actually responsible for saying what he said. Plus the people who were upset didn't (not to my knowledge anyway) threaten to kill him or destroy his entire country. Now a large group of Muslims (including governments) are asking demanding that the Danish government shut down a newspaper because that newspaper violated one of their beliefs. Apples and oranges here. You cannot compare the two.

And we don't practice free speech, I don't think there is a single western country that does - and the reason why is the fear of insulting certain people's sensibilities...

It certainly seems like the muslim culture in certain areas are quite sensitive and demands full control totally ignoring what may be the culture these places
