I would say so. Of course, like conservatives, it has more to do with the constant bombardment of negative images in the media than anything else. The major media corporations are all located in urban centers, which means that they pay more attention to what goes on locally. As there is a much larger Black population in the cities, there is much more Black crime being reported. So the white suburbs hear all about Black crime, and nothing about all the white crime that goes on in the suburbs. In other words, they lear to associate Blacks with crime without counter positive images of Blacks or concurrent negative images of other whites.

In addition, we have the modern minstral shows of gangsta rappers feeding white people an entertainment stereotype of thuggery and hypersexuality that exists only among a small subsection of the Black nation. It is, however, what people want to see, just like the vast majority of media entertainent involving Italians is about the Mafia.

If all people were white "us and them" would still exist, but I agree with all that. However, the media is merely exaggerating a reality - blacks commit proportionally more violent crime.

There's a difference between poor black people, and ghetto black people. Just like there's a difference between poor white people, and white trash. Just living in a trailer or in the ghetto doesn't necessarily make you one of those. The real issue at hand is the ghetto culture, and to a lesser extent, the white trash culture. People tend to think all black people are part of the ghetto culture because of rap music. The roommate I had at UF could be considered poor, but he wasn't part of the ghetto culture, nor were his friends so I had no problem with him. If he had acted like he was straight out of a gang and talked with ebonics, then we would have had a problem. Does that make me a racist? I don't think so, but I'm sure the whacky liberals on here will make sure to point out that I am obviously a bigot for not accepting the cultural diversity of blacks.

Here's a different way to read this:

If you look at Republican rhetoric over the past few decades -- at least as far back as Nixon's "Southern stategy" in 1968 -- the GOP has basically campaigned again and again on a platform of fear, and specifically fear of The Other. (The only significant exception would be Reagan's "Morning in America" campaign). Fear of blacks, fear of communists, fear of feminists, fear of gays and lesbians, fear of terrorists, etc. etc. That does suggest that people more likely to identify themselves as Republicans are also more likely to respond strongly to the perception of external threats. Since fear is also a primary ingredient -- perhaps the primary ingredient -- in prejudice, it would also not be surprising to find such prejudice among GOP members.

Like Democrats don't use the same scare tactics about taking away social security, losing medicare benefits, fear of global warming, fear of jobs moving overseas, etc?

Far more damning, I think, was the poll data from just before the last election that showed quite clearly that most Kerry voters could correctly state Kerry's position on the issues, whereas most Bush voters (yes, a majority) got his positions wrong.
