Yes, actually. In a week or so we'll have what might be the largest contingent in-country.

          1) you'll be there after ten years
          2) and if you will, your casualty rate will be lower than ours. Because our casualty rate in Afghanistan was four times lower than your casualty rate in Vietnam.
          a) How many NATO soldiers do you think have died in 4 years in Afghanistan? Might have reached a hundred, but I doubt it. So we're talking a casualty rate a hundred times lower than yours. Not just that; the insurgents are being marginalised as we speak. They can't base in Afghanistan proper any more. And Pakistan will be far less friendly to them than they were to your enemies in the 80s

          b) "Our" casualty rate in Vietnam was 0

          • The US can't help it if it kicks so much more ass than Russia. Stop trying to make excuses for Russia and just accept that we pwn you in everyway. You were only let into the G-7 out of pitty.

Why? We've only lost 3 soldiers to enemy action over the course of 4 years.

You'll pardon me if that staggering casualty rate doesn't frighten me.

The rotating leadership is being handed over to us next week. We held it a couple of years ago, now we're up again. We're flying in another 2000 to take care of that responsibility. If Germany is currently in charge they'll probably rotate out a large number of their troops.

                • I'm afraid even if we rotate out the leadership, our troops will probably stay in.

                  • In similar news, I should get rid of saying "I'm afraid". where's a drunk thread when you need one.

                    • Generally not. NATO's been keeping troop levels fairly constant. If we're putting in 2000 extra then somebody's pulling 2000 out.

                      • We still might have the largest forces in there after that. Anyone got figures?

                          b) "Our" casualty rate in Vietnam was 0
                          a) We are taliking about two different wars here. When we were there it was a proxy war between two superpowers. When US came there, they had us and and the most importantly, our ally - the Northern Alliance on their side. And the country was already devastated by previous wars. So, the circumstances are completely different. Had we trained, supplied and armed the Taliban, your achievments would be much lesser and your casualty rate would be much bigger. But, not only we don't do that, but we actually do the opposite - we help you in this war, because it's in our national interests now.

                          b) Who cares? "Their" casualty rate in Vietnam was about 60,000 - at least four times bigger than our casualty rate in Afghanistan.
