        Ask Thorstein Veblen.

FTR I think that people who do this are idiots. If everyone does it, you just end up working more for no improvement in result.

Yeah.. they are playing a loser's game... seriously.

Unless everyone else stops competing with you, you'll just end up working more for no improvement in welfare.

If everyone works more to have the best car on the block, then everyone ends up working more and right back where they started car wise.

I'm going to drop the bomb now. He works not in some generic computer web development job but instead made his money working in porn. Most of his money came from working as the head IT guy for Danni's Hard drive. I can't help but feel I should have gotten into porn instead of some "respectable" line of business. I want that $3.25 million house on San Francisco Bay.

He wasn't one of the stars per say but he managed the website and made sure the videos were cropped correctly and that things would download for the paying customers. He made millions off of being a porn enabler.

Yeah, if there's one valuable lesson I have learned is that making the 'right' decision is not necessarily the right decision. I am starting to experience how choosing a career in science has come back to bite me in the derriere.

I have a house but it isn't a $3.25 million house on the bay.

No. It's an established fact. It only works if you engage in it and nobody else does.

Say for example everyone on your block works harder so that they can buy a better car than everyone else. If everyone buys a better car, then you've gained nothing, since the point of conspicuous consumption is that everyone else has to have worse than you in order for you to receive a benefit. As it stands, you just work harder for nothing.

It's cheaper and easier if you just stop caring.

I wouldn't say they've gained nothing. They still have a very nice car.

I just realized my circle of friends include millionaire pornographers, gay businessmen, and the homeless German guy who sits out in front of the liquor store. I can't help but feel I am behind all of them in some way or another. The others have more money then me while the homeless guy has more free time then me.
