  • I'd forgotten how fun it is watching Eyes get self-pwn3d

And yes, if I want to read a bunch of longposts about why Civ 4 sucks or is great then I'll go visit the forums dedicated to that sort of crap.

He's gotten so pwned on the Civ4 forums, he has to try to argue here where people don't have as ready access to his failures.

        • Actually I don't go on the civ4 forums anymore because I uninstalled the game 2 months ago...along with most the other people I knew when I was playing it.

          • Well you missed out on the PC Game of the Year (as stated by Gamespot, Gamespy, IGN, among others) .

              • So it actually is better than Civ III? Civ III was kind of a let down and I've been avoiding IV for that reason.

                • I hated Civ3, but civ4 is even worse. Also, game of the year doesn't mean ****. It's kind of like the Oscars and Golden globes and, it doesn't mean anything. Civ3 was a horrible game, but I'd take it any day over this. At least civ3 wasn't a contest to see who could attack first with their catapult stacks where everyone mashes the move button in an attempt to go first. Actually, Civ4 is a 2 unit game, just axemen and catapults.

                    Undoubtably better!

                    Have you even played Civ4?

No wonder you hated it and Ozzy beat you down, you won't get far if you just try to win with axemen and catapults as your 'secret weapon'.

                    • DD,

It totally depends on the specific reasons why you didn't like CivIII. CivIV is a very different game, with some features that were aimed at fixing things many people didn't like about CivIII (such as ICS). Some people do dislike it. Others like it a lot (I am one, as are Vel and Yin).

                      -Arrian

                      edit: to expand a bit...

                      ICS - toast
Pollution - gone, replaced by health/unhealth (no more cleaning tiles with your workers)
Riots - gone, replaced by unhappy citizens who just don't work. No city disorder where everything just shuts down.

                      • Btw, that WASN'T a typo by Arrian. YES, YIN (as in Yin26) likes the game!

                        • He ate the box, as per his bet re: ICS. There is video of this, apparently (I have no desire to see that!).

It's not that Yin (or Vel, for that matter) are total fanboys of CIV. There are areas they think could be improved. Duh, there usually is *something*

There have been technical issues too. I've been fine, but some others have had serious problems with crashing and stuff.

                          • Yeah, that depends (it seems) on whether you have an ATI card.

I got a BELOW MINIMUM NVidia laptop card, but on 'low' resolution (and sometimes 'medium') with the 1.52 patch, it works great... even during late game there is little slowdown. But I've only played standard maps. Maybe I'll see how it runs on a large one.

What was your name on ladder again? Obviously you haven't played against anyone decent. Go Inca and just mass axemen and catapults, end of story. Swordsmen don't do ****, and don't get me started on archers. Horse archers maybe? If you get oracle and try to go for longbows you won't get catapults in time to stop an axeman+catapult rush so your longbows aren't going to do ****. Your only response is to go massive axeman+catapult stacks to counter mine and then it basically becomes a stalemate because it's impossible for anyone to take a city. Why? Because catapults only work if you attack first. If you try to attack first as the attacker then you have to double move and forget about his city defenses which means you automatically lose. That's also assuming he doesn't hav ea road there to hit you the moment you come in. Plus, all his units are going to heal 3 times as fast and he can send in reinforcements. If you don't go large stacks to counter his then you will eventually be over run. So the game basically becomes a massive military build fest as you throw your stacks away trying to get that one city. Whoever moves first wins, end of story.

Crappy multiplay and the mod problem (I might have been spoiled by MGE and SMAC).
