[q=Arrian]The most damning thing wasn't your defeats. It was the basic point of your whining: you want "magic keys" so you can win every time. CivIV doesn't provide those magic keys (as it aims for game balance) and that pisses you off. The end.[/q]

      Seems about right.

        • Game balance? Are you kidding me? Wow, all I can say is just wow. I guess that's what happens when you don't play MP. Go play some MP and see what the most common strats are right now and then come talk to me about game balance. What a ****ing joke. There's a reason MP is practically dead and it's not the zillion different technical issues.

I think that is the major question, if it is dead than we can take a look at the reasons, but it doens't seem to be to me... perhaps Civ II MP community was much bigger?

Anyhow, time will show whether Civ IV MP community dissapears, or grows.

                • The only way one could tell if CIV MP was dead is by checking the lobby for about a month. AFAICT though, it is far from dead...

...another good way would be to check out C4P forums, and ask the mods there what their traffic has been like...

...but I get the feeling EoN would just rant and rave at that again...

                  • It's ok to discuss the real or perceived problems of Civ IV, it's also ok to discuss the topic of "Why are people in other forums, always so mean to me?" as Thorn has asked originally...

But enough with the personal stuff and insults... Everybody is welcome to their opinions, but let's not play the dump on a poster game because you disagree with them
                    Keep on Civin'

Well because of advances in internet gaming, you don't really need a forum for running games. You can go to the internet 'lobby' and find your friends or new people to play against.

So it is very hard to tell from simply looking at a forum how alive it is. And it seems that SLD will only look at that. CivII MP community may have seemed bigger if only because the forum was so important to coordinate games.

                      • Actually I'm looking at the official C4P ladder and I see 70% of people inactive and I see massive amounts of people who started off early in the game are now inactive. I also see alot of people who played competitively giving up on the game. Sure you can go find some dip**** to host a BIG HUGE GAME FAST SPEED NO QUITTERS but that guy will be gone in a couple of months.

                          • I'm at the C4P ladder as well, and I wonder where SLD is getting his stats. I believe he's made them all up. I see numerous active players and tons of games every day.

If you look at the Hall of Fame, most players have played their last game in January (many just played a few days ago). Some played their last game in December, true, but a small minority.

On the Top Skill Ratings ranking (20 game minimum), only 4 haven't played their last game in January.

                            • The reports on the ladder are majorly inflated. When you play a CTON for example, the first player that loses reports to all the people above him...that's like 7 reports right there from one person and it's only one game. Also, look at some of the people like Cruise, ktulu, unimatrix, and trinity. Ktulu didn't even bother with the game from what I can tell, unimatrix played about 120 of his games in just the first month or so, and trinity and cruise look like they're MIA these days. Plus, if you look you'll see tons of people on the ladder in active for 2 weeks or more. Playing 1 game a week is not activity, not when any other game is having as many games played in one day as Civ4 is in a month. Quote all the stats you want, but it is nothing but overinflated bull****. Oh, and my favorite one is the epic games where people report every so many years so you get like 10 reports in just one game.
