Visitors from neighboring towns coming to gamble don't count.
Well you can take issue with the official numbers if you want, but it doesn't change them.

    I'm still right.

        Poll time.

        (and live).
If that were true, wouldn't Ottawa be outpacing Calgary in growth instead of being far behind?

First, what is "easy driving distance"? Dependant on your answer, you've just essentially agreed to one of the biggest Western complaints about central Canadian control of the country.

Second, it's not "Calgary is in the middle of nowhere", it's "Calgary is the middle of nowhere", or "Calgary is nowhere".

Isn't poly great ?? An article on appreciation of the Canadian dollar led to a p**sing contest between Calgary, Ottawa and I think the greater Washington D.C. area and even spawned a second thread

The greater Washington DC area didn't take the flamebait.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

You were outgunned from the start, everyone knows Washington DC is crime-ridden, povery-stricken, and generally an undesireable place filled with crooks, liars, and lobbyists.

Yet despite those facts, people keep moving here in large numbers. Imagine that...

They're drug dealers or masochists or politicians -- either way, you lose.

And yet I would still choose to live in DC over Calgary in a heartbeat.

People who move to Ottawa are masochists, so it's fitting they'd want to live in DC. After all, who wouldn't want one of the highest murder rates in North America to raise a family or enjoy life?

A friend of mine did a 16 month internship in Ottawa (today's her last day), and I haven't heard a single good thing about Ottawa from her. And I hear lots of rants.

I've been living in Ottawa - Gatineau for the last 5 years and it's OK. As has been said, the night life isn't much to talk about though.
As far as i'm concerned i would never ever consider moving to Washington if i had the choice between it and Calgary.
                              What?
