AS for basing troops in Iqualuit, maybe its not the preferred posting but a military should be out around the country, not all sitting within an hour of Toronto-- The fact that this decision will alos be an economic boon for Iqualuit isn't a terrible thing either.
We already have icebreakers that can clear the way for navy ships, not that we would ever need to use them that way. Much easier and far faster to send in troops by air if necessary.

As for posting troops in Iqualuit, we would have to base their families up north too.

The reg forces will go where they are told to go, but it is important to realize that a posting like Iqualuit is hard on military families, just as the constant postings overseas are hard on the families left behind. The spouses will be forced to move to a place that has no jobs, or stay down south away from their spouse.

Now if there is a vital need, that's different, but in this case, the troops would be up north doing nothing.

Only cause we all agree the Liberals are nuts.

What's is there to talk about the Liberal fool.

No, we don't. We have no ships capable of going everywhere in our Arctic 365 days a year. That's why these ice breakers were news.

Maybe the people who are trying to steal NDP votes, again, and again based on Conservatives are scary... when all along it is Liberals who are comparing a Chinese-Canadian candidate to a dog, telling us that parents will buy beer and popcorn, and telling entire provinces that they can fellate them?

          • Went to Carrefours Angrignon today. Saw all of Paul Martin's signs everywhere.

What a rock-solid Grit riding that is. The Conservative candidate even looked like a sacrificial lamb...

            • The nominations are in for my riding and it is as bad as I thought. Pundits are already talking about a Fry/Robinson battle and I hate both of them. Truly this is a jinxed riding:

              CON
              Tony Fogarassy
              LIB
              Hedy Fry
              NDP
              Svend Robinson
              GRN
              Jared Evans
              CHP
              Joe Pal
              CAP
              Alexander Frei
              LBT
              John Clarke

I drove through Stockwell Day's riding near Kelowna yesterday. I thought he was a bit of a laughingstock these days, but I can't see him losing his seat.

My highlight of the year: the engagement.

But did you vote in an advance poll, or are you not going to be able to vote?

I have to live with my haystack. What do you have to complain about if given a choice? You never know, in a real race even your 'guy' might win. I get no such luxury in this jerrymandered city.

I already received my absentee ballot.

I vote in the riding beside Paul Martin's. I will be waiting to cast my ballot until the candidates list is officially finalised and I can get some biographical info on the Green, NDP and Liberal candidates, plus some voting records on the Liberal candidate (most specifically when and how often she's voted against party lines).

                    • Specifically I vote in Notre-Dame-de-Grace-Lachine. Martin runs in Lasalle-Emard, which starts about a km from my parents' house.

                      • I wonder if the Liberal candidate will provide me with that voting info herself. It might be worth emailing her to request it. Make some busywork for some college-student intern at least to compile that information.

                            • Really? The Conservative candidate didn't look like much (no political history whatsoever), and although there is a heavy French presence in his riding, they're not particularly separatist. The BQ candidate is also very young. Both of them look like lambs to the slaughter.

That riding's been solidly red for quite some time. The PC won it in 1984, but other than that it's always fallen for them.

A lot of history in them. Ever hear of the Lachine canal?

EDIT: plus, respectively, that should be haystack west and haystack east...
