And it is surprising how little time it takes. I was very late to vote not long ago and was asked to stay behind as a witness for my poll. It was all done and over in 30 minutes.
So you're shutting BC polls at 7?

EDIT: miscounted the # of zones

    • I was allowing for Atlantic polls to close an hour earlier than everywhere else. Until NFD and NS become the populous powerhouses of Confederation, it would be a safe compromise to allow their results to come early, IMO.

They would close at 8PM in BC, and the ballots from Quebec City to Victoria could be counted at the same time.

Also, enforce laws allowing time off for voting, or go so far as to ban businesses opening before noon or 2PM on federal election days.

I'd be in favour of shutting the country down til 3PM PTZ.

There is nothing more important to do, and if you really have a good excuse like national security, or driving public transit, or something, there are advanced polls.

          • But telling the CBC they cannot tell us rubes how the people of Montreal are voting, in this day where I can find it by looking at a web site, is silly.

            • Will someone who knows PLEASE tell me what the conservatives have been doing right? I thought they were doomed, but I guess the ad campaign is working?

..or maybe..JUST MAYBE...people finally want to bench the Liberals for a season?

              • Harper ran a positive campaign til Christmas, releasing a policy every day or so, while Martin flondered and gasped for breath. Then traditional liberal media outlets (like the Star) began easing people into the idea of a Harper led government (it's like they know that creating a Mexico of the North is not so hot an idea).

Then Martin got sucker punched by the aftermath of Goodale backtracking on a previously announced policy and timetable for a decision. This, I think, is what will sink them more than anything else, assuming the Tories don't out-sink them.

The Liberals managed to unleash the (undesreved most likely) spectre of corruption upon themselves on the eve of an election.

In short, Martin and Goodale be dumbasses. As Layton said ''there was a time when prime ministers themselves knew what they believe. … We now have a prime minister who thinks Lester Pearson is just the name of an airport."

                    • What a non-issue

                      Look at the election timing

Time zone Polls open and close in local time
                      Newfoundland Time
                      8:30 a.m. – 8:30 p.m.

                      Atlantic Time
                      8:30 a.m. – 8:30 p.m.

                      Eastern Time
                      9:30 a.m. – 9:30 p.m.

                      Central Time
                      8:30 a.m. – 8:30 p.m.

                      Mountain Time
                      7:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m.

                      Pacific Time
                      7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m

That translates to poll closing times using MST where I happen to be of 5 and 5:30 for Atlantic Canada, 7:30 for every other province except 8 pm for BC.

Does the 32 seats of Atlantic Canada make that much of a difference?? ( although frankly I don't know why Atlantic Canadian polls don't close at 9:30 local times like Ontario). Do people really think that the results in Atlantic canada make one whit of difference ?

If you don't then then the only other poll closing discrepency is BC half an hour later than the rest. Do people think that there are scores and scores of people waiting at the polling stations to hear the latest results based on the latest counts, to nip in and vote.

This MIGHT be a practical issue when BC could vote for 2 hours after final results were known in Ontario and Quebec--- but 30 minutes ??? and consider that it might take 15 of those minutes for the first results to start coming in

                      Non issue

                          • Considering how my previous predictions have worked out, here's what I figure is the best outcome for the Conservatives. This assumes that they will retain every seat they have, and that they will win every seat where they are contesting. I've done it riding by riding, and I also assume that the NDP will win where the riding is contested by both the Liberals and the NDP.
