Air marshals can't sit and think about the logic of running around or out of the airplane with a bomb. They don't have the luxury to spend time on that. They believed the person had a bomb, and when he failed to comply with their orders to get down, they opened fire. What exactly is it, MOBIUS, that you would like them to have done differently?

The same approach as with Saddam: approach him gently, say "we won't use force on you", and see what he has to "offer".

You know, law enforcement officers are trained to deal with worst-case scenarios. When somebody says they've got a bomb, it's assumed that they have a bomb. My guess is that, had he actually been in possession of a bomb, appraoching him peacefully may well have ended in more than just one death.

Maybe. I assume every shooting like this is reviewed in the US like it is in the UK and I think that's the right approach. None of us have enough facts to say whether they were right or wrong in this case (not yet anyway).

Before I found out about all the cockups that led up to it I supported the police action at the Stockwell incident. Turns out it could/should have never got to that stage.
