You wouldn't have to 'look' like a Mongol to be a Bulgar.

Interestingly enough, Boris Yeltsin (Russian) possesses 'Mongolian' facial features, as did Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (Pakistani) but neither would think of themselves as Mongol.

The Bulgars were a Turkic race which established dominion over an area with a mixed population of Byzantine Greeks, Vlachs, Slavs, Armenians, Pechenegs et cetera.

They've had a long long time to intermarry...

      • The romans were her for about 500-600 hundred years and the turks for about 500 years but if you take all Bulgarian conquers of Macedonia you wont gather a full 100 years alltogether. But for you we are Bulgars.
        Are you reading bulgarian literature.

Err, since when did I call you a Bulgar ?

I just pointed out that to be one, you don't have to look like Chinghiz Khan...

As for reading Bulgarian literature, I must confess I can't recall reading any, but I have enjoyed Bulgarian church music and folk music, as I have Byzantine church music and Turkish jazz.

simple map of the Slavic tribes on the Balkans in the middle of the VII century, which I found. It's on Bulgarian (and Cyrillic), so I'll just list the names of the Slavic tribes there (from south to north and west to east): Velegiziti (around Larissa), Dragoviti (to the north of Solun, along the Vardar River), Smoliani (to the east of Dragoviti, between Philippi and Philipopolis (Plovdiv)), Berziti (to the north of Dragoviti, between Skopie and Ohrid, upper flow of Vardar), Strumci (along the Struma River), Serbian tribes (obviously in Serbia), Moravians (along the Morava River), Timochans (between the Morava and Danube rivers), The seven Slavic tribes (along the lower flow of the Danube), Severi (eastern Danubian plain, the west of Odesos, Mesembria and the Black Sea coast), Branichevtsi (to the north of the Moravians and Timochani, around Singidunum (Beograd)), Abodriti (to the north of Singidunum and Sirmium). But I think this particular map (from the Bulgarian MFA site) would be better...http://www.mfa.government.bg/history...garia/121.html

                            • Serbia recognises the Republic of Macedonia under this name. Serbia also recognises existing borders between Macedonia and Greece. It would be a good step forward if Greece too recognised the name of their northern neighbour and affirmed the existing borders. After all, we should live in peace and friendship, for we are brothers and share the same Orthodox faith.

Mark, I have a question for you: Are there any people living in the Greek part of Macedonia and in Solun in particular that speak Macedonian and claim they are Macedonian nationals of Slav origin. If the answer to this question is yes, then tell me what percentage of people in this region they make.

If this percentage is significant then they should be granted some sort of autonomy which need not necessarily be territorial. A form of cultural autonomy would suffice in keeping their national identity.

As for Macedonian language, though similar to both Serbian and Bulgarian, the language is distinct from both in many aspects. The most notable aspect of their distinction is the existence of articles attached to adjectives and nouns which are not present in any Slavic language other than Macedonian.

Another important characteristic of the Macedonian language is that it is the most weakly inflected language of all Slavic languages. What can we conclude from this fact? That Macedonia was the stage of much mixture of various tribes and peoples which were forced to speak the same language to understand each other and therefore simplified this common language by loosing much of its original inflection. The stress system in the Macedonian language follows the same pattern of simplification. These simplifications are also present in English, a language resulting from a dramatic mix of several different nations.
