What do you mean by "exemptions"? With the exception of liquor stores and strip clubs, Sunday store hours here in the US are largely a matter of custom, not law (though union contracts have some say in some industries, that's true).

Wouldn't the NFL players be banned from working too?

Because clearly working Sunday makes you a bad person...

... oh wait, this is that religion stuff people keep telling me about, isn't it? Jesus, it's messed up.

Well, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania just figured out that they'd sell more alcohol if the liquor stores were open on Sundays. Brilliant.

Then they finally loosened the law so beer distributors could open on Sundays as well. For years you were stuck buying over-priced six packs at bars or pizza places if you wanted beer on Sunday.

Bottom line - whatever is open on Saturday should be open on Sunday.

impossible where I live. I live in a 24/7 type of town.

In fact, I just worked last sunday. But I'm filling in for a guy who was fired. I'll be going back on days/mon-fri next week probably.

of course. Restaurants and bars have to stay open. So it doesn't help them any.

It is clearly overregulated here, today not as strictly anymore, but still ruled by law. The law itself offers several different ecxeptions, it describes detailed under what conditions work on sunday is still possible.

Yes, but from everything we hear over here, Europe is a land of angry heathens , out to destroy their Christian heritage ... you'd think this would be right up your ally.

In Norway, most shops are closed on Sundays.
Pretty much the only place to buy let's say milk on a Sunday would be in a small convenience store or a petrol station. (At outrageous prices)
Want to go shop for new shoes on a Sunday? Forget it. Closed.
Restaurants and bars and so on are open though.

Well, not angry, but the rest is ok

Overall there's the tendency here to move away from the ban (indicated by more and more exceptions), but it did not lead so far that the ban was totally given up. But personally I think it's just a matter of time, since most consumers don't like the ban, and in times where the domestic economy doesn't run that good the unions will not be able to hold up their fundamental resistance against work on sunday for too long.

                              Wal Mart?
                              Kroger?
Every convenience store and fast food place in town?
All the shops, local, regional, and chain?

It's a lot easier naming those that are not open on Sunday: Chick-fil-A, and one or two others that nobody goes to.

way back in ancient history, like 30 to 40 years ago, most US states had "blue laws" for retail.

It was suggested that abolitioning blue laws would make it more difficult for family owned small retailers, and advantage chains, who can more easily staff 7 days a week.

Interestingly enough, chains have become ubiquitpous since then. Though thats hardly the only reason.

And of course it IS possible to survive being closed one day when everyone else is open - I have many shabbat observant relatives in retail who can testify to that. Its not very easy though, and it helps if some part of your customer base is sabbath observant as well.
