It's simple economics - store owners who spend all of Sunday at church tend to go out of business if other places are open.

I wouldn't mind if sundays were banned. I wouldn't have to work then. But seriously, the only real reason to ban work on sundays is because of a religious thing, and well that just shouldn't be mixing with things like the law and economics and such.

Too true, this seven day week is a time for the lazy people of yester decade. Bring on the six day week. God doesn't need his day of rest, none of us get it.

Sunday observance is the norm in the Scottish islands. I was in the Hebrides a couple of years ago, and on Sunday everything is shut.

We have it, but in recent years more and more exemptions were made so that some can open sunday. I think it will fall completely sooner or later. Thing is, it has not (or not anymore) a religious background here, but is rather a battle ground for the unions. Yeah, for the consumer it sucks.

Untill about ten years ago regular shops couldn't open on sundays. When the Christian Democrats were finally pushed from power, the ban was lifted. Opening hours were also deregulated (before everything would close at 6 pm).

its banned here, and theres a vote on the 27th to loosen it and allow trainstations and airports to be open for business.

Why should store workers have Sunday off? What's so damn special about them?
