  • Election 2005

VA Gov, Lt. Gov, and AG, NJ Gov, a bunch of Mayors (NYC, Detroit, SD, St. Paul, etc.), and ballot initiatives in Ohio, CA, and TX are being voted on tonight.

Anyone willing to make projections? Avatar bets?

    I'll say:
-Kaine (D) will be VA Gov, by a couple points. The Republicans win the two downballot races.
-Corzine (D) will be NJ Gov, by ~5%.
-Sanders (R) will be SD Mayor by 3%.
-The two weakest of OH's election reforms win, but nonpartisan redistricting and changing the role of the SoS fail.
-All of Arnie's propositions fail (except possibly 73). Prop. 79 passes.
-TX puts the Bigot Amendment in its Constitution by 20-30%.

The rest will be blowouts or are races that I don't care about.

Virginia - the lines at the polls were long this AM, and the vibe around here is heavy pro - Kaine - but then this isnt the part of Virginia that Kilgore is counting on to win. The death penalty ads were really over the top - as you may be aware, Im NOT against the DP in all circumstances - but Kilgore attacked Kaine for having in the past expressed personal opposition to the DP (Kaine is a Roman Catholic, and follows the church on that) and for having represented defendants in DP cases (which, is like, NECESSARY if we're going to have a DP, Mr. Kilgore) even though Kaine has pledged to enforce the law. I mean Kilgore really turned me off, and i think many northern virginian centrists feel the same way. Of course alot of it will depend on taxes and your view of Warner (related issues) and on transportation and education.

POTM is doing volunteer work for Kaine today, and she and QOTM will be at local HQ tonight.

I can't vote this year by three months but I'd be leaning Kaine. I like Kaine in general, but Kilgore's traffic plans are of particular impact to me, and that might outweigh the other issues.

I wish VA governors could run for a 2nd term, because I really liked Warner.

??? I actually didnt vote for Leslie Byrne, i have a personal gripe with her, but I imagine most voters will vote straight down for her. I voted for Deeds (heck, hes even a tad conservative for me, hes endorsed by the NRA) the GOP guy was demogoguing pretty strong - OTOH Warner may not be as important in the AG race.

Note, we have legislative elections as well.

I bet you're better informed than half the voters out there. Stupid voting age.

I voted today for Rockville Mayor and Council
Captain of Team Apolyton - ISDG 2012

He wants to put highway prioritization in local hands - I mean I cant think of any states that do that - State DOT still has final say, though local metro planning orgs make long range plans, that effect federal funding. Basically it sounding like more demagoging. And yeah, the local chambers of commerce prefer not to have to go Richmond, where they have less influence. But the chambers sometimes have a skewed view of transportation priorities. And its not like Kilgore is for local control in general - i havent heard him argue for full local control of land use (which the developers would oppose tooth and nail) its more a knock against VDOT.

My VA predictions: Bollings wins by 5%, Deeds wins by 5%, Kaine edges in by .5%, but with a recount.

Also, Kilgore's ads (both on the DP and on illegal immigrants) really turned me off.

If he wants to have an impact, he can volunteer, like POTM did. Like I did, before I was voting age.

It would be easier for our area to raise taxes to pay to, among other things, widen 66.

My understanding is that common wisdom in VA is Republicans win AG races. And I've heard that Byrne is pretty liberal for VA (i.e., not a Warner/Kaine Democrat). The polls show them generally behind (albeit, by a hair), and they need a lead in the polls to make up for the better GOP ground game.

yeah, mister local control wants Fairfax to control highway dollars, but he doesnt want poor old Herndon to be able to build a day labor site.

I actually wanted Byrne to run against Rep. Jim Moran in the Dem primary, 2 years ago. She sat it out, which was a big disappointment - i think she could have won.

I havent heard anyone really talking about her ideology - people just dont follow the Lt Gov race that closely.

Im not sure when our last Dem AG was. Of course before Warner wed had a string of GOP govs as well, since Wilder.

It's not the local control issue, it's that I want more money devoted towards transportation whatever the source.

er, we had a referendum about a regional transportation tax a couple of years ago. It lost. Warner supported it. Did Kilgore? Kilgore says hes gonna pay for roads from "extra state money" whatever that is.
