Death row inmate escapes in Texas

A manhunt is under way in Texas after a death row inmate walked out of a Houston jail in civilian clothes and with a fake badge.
Charles Victor Thompson, 35, apparently changed out of his usual orange overalls in a room used for discussions between inmates and lawyers.

Thompson was convicted of murder after shooting his ex-girlfriend and her boyfriend dead in 1998.

However he was sentenced to death only last Friday.

"He still has not been found," said Lieutenant John Martin, sheriff of Harris County, about seven hours after the escape from Baker Street jail.

Thompson was being held in a high-security unit, although the prison was a county jail, as Thompson had still not been moved to a higher-category jail.

Authorities described him as 5ft 11in (180cm) and weighing about 16st (104kg), and say he was wearing a dark blue shirt, khaki trousers and white sports shoes.

"He managed to get some civilian clothing. He had changed out of the orange jumpsuit that inmates ordinarily wear," Lt Martin told the Houston Chronicle.

"We don't know exactly where he got that from."

Authorities said they were searching central Houston and the surrounding area, concentrating on likely escape routes.

    'Pre-planned'

An investigation was under way into how he got the clothes and a law enforcement identity card.

"It definitely suggests that this was pre-planned and strongly suggests he had help in making his escape," Lt Martin said.

The sheriff told the Chronicle that about 3,300 prisoners were held in the Baker Street jail.

Thompson's escape was the first since the facility was built about three years ago, he said.

The relatives of Thompson's victims, Dennise Hayslip, 39, and Darren Keith Cain, 30, were shocked at the news.

"This is something that's just unfathomable to me," said Ms Hayslip's brother, Mike Donaghy, 45.

"How can a convicted murderer get away like that? How did he get in civilian clothes? How did he get a badge?"

Yeah, I read about this. Very mysterious. And it adds to the embarassment of this week's escape from the back of a moving, armored prison van by a handcuffed, leg-shackelled prisoner who was being transported to a hospital. The two officers, who were separated by the prisoner only by see-through wire mesh, didn't notice anything until they arrived at the hospital and went to get the guy from the back. Or so they say... The cuffs and shackles were still there, all closed, but Mr. Houdini had vanished. They got him the next day, but still. Not exactly Texas justice these days.

To say nothing of high ranking al qaeda members escaping from a base in Afghanistan.
Wonder what Texas prison official was responsible for that?
At least we have a death row.

Al-Qaeda Leader Was Among Prisoners Who Escaped in Afghanistan

Nov. 3 (Bloomberg) -- An alleged top lieutenant of al-Qaeda terrorist group leader Osama bin Laden was among four people who escaped from a detention center near Kabul in July, the U.S. military command in Afghanistan said.

While the escape was announced by the command in July, the identity of the escapee was reported earlier this week during a court-martial of a U.S. army sergeant accused of maltreating prisoners in Afghanistan, the Combined Forces Command Afghanistan said yesterday in a statement on its Web site.

From the makers of "Con Air" ...

              Actually who gives a f***?

While he probably deserved the sentense he got, he don't seem to be dangerous to anyone else than his ex-gf, whom he already killed. His best way to stay alive now is to NOT hurt anyone else, which would reveal him and get him caught and put back to death row.

What the hell is murder-for-hire? How many offers was he thinking he'd get for hits on what would appear to be an ordinary family?

[edit]Or was he planning to take out a hit on this family? With what? Did he bury gold in a field before he was sent to prison?

The real problem is the appeal process.
The condemned are automatically given an appeal, want it or not.
So, we have people with absolutely nothing to lose, just hanging around.
Well, not "hanging" hanging. If that were the case, we would have no problem, would we?

Duh - prison guards are payed poorly for a dangerous, tedious job. They routinely are not even getting Cost-of-Living increases due to state budget crunches. While Americans continue to vote for politicians who criminalize "victimless" behavior, i.e. things like possessing pot. And voters cotinue to whine about their tax cuts.
