Actually, 'Gyp' or 'Gypped' is one of the few socially acceptable racial words left in canada, since after the war people couldn't say "I Got Jewed" unless they were polish in which case it was ok, so they had to make SOME kind of ethnic comment ( u understand) so now kids say 'I Got Gypped'.

They are almost certainly referring to people from the Caucasas mountain regions rather than the caucasian (same root) racial type.

The equation of White with northwestern european gentile was a general thing, at least in the "anglo saxon" world, back at the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries. As CG explains, the Irish became white after having not been, and later the Italians, Jews (and I think slavs and Greeks)

Right now the asians are becoming white. Japanese Americans are farthest along in that process.

The last time i was in Israel was 1981. North African youngsters disrupted Labour rallies, chanted "begin melech Israel" to shock the ashkenazim, etc. Meanwhile some Ashkenazim called them "shvartzes". This quickly overturned the situation of a few years earlier, when Mizrahi activism was a "far left" thingie. The children of the tent cities and the dev towns in rebellion against the establishment. (IIRC, Yemenis were more "white" than North Africans, and Iraqis more "white" than Yemenis)

Since then, education, assimilation, intermarriage etc made the sephardim "white" i suppose, which is why you focus on immigrants from Africa (i presume you mean Ethiopia)

Which is the point. "Race" is linked to cultural differences and broader questions of cultural assimilation.

I've NEVER heard of anyone not thinking Irish were white. In the 19th century they were dirty Catholics so some people didn't want to hire them etc... but they were always a white group. Also in the deep south during segregation there were actually only two legal groups 1hite or black and this caused a problem of what to do with Native-Amerians and Asians who lived in the deep south. Believe it or not courts officially ruled that both groups were "white" and could use the white facilities.

they didnt call the Irish "colored" - they were barbarian bog kerns, or whatever. There was definitely a "racial" overtone to hostility against them, in the US and in the UK. Theres a book that CG has recommended, I think, that I would like to read called "How the Irish became white"

I am not surprised that Stormfront or whatever has a "Latin" racist forum- the upper classes are pretty homogenously "white"- not much mixed blood there at all, and that is not counting newer immigrants like Italians and Germans.
