The equation of White with northwestern european gentile was a general thing, at least in the "anglo saxon" world, back at the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries. As CG explains, the Irish became white after having not been, and later the Italians, Jews (and I think slavs and Greeks)

Right now the asians are becoming white. Japanese Americans are farthest along in that process.

When you talk about becoming white, what you really mean is being accepted/assimilated into the majority culture, right?

If I'm not mistaken, you still register race in official censuses, IDs, etc in the US. I doubt Japanese would be registered as "White" (or register themselves as white whatever the case might be.) ?

Race registration is by self-reporting - you are whatever you think you are (in cases where employers have to report identity for affirmitave action, its supposed to be based on what friends and coworkers think you are, IIUC) Youre right about Japanese. I meant when the group reaches a point where the residual social stigma of being "nonwhite" disappears. Of course what we want is for that stigma to disappear for ALL groups - ie for racism to end. But while we've come a long way, we're not there yet, and meanwhile some groups escape before others.

I grew up in Panama, which is a very heteregenous country, and becoming more so daily. There is rampant racism in Panama. White people speak of themselves as white, and they look down on blacks in Panama, most of which are decendents of Afro-Carribean workers brought in. There is certainly a constant low level of anti-semitism, thought it rarely ever leads to anything, and Panama has a successful Jewish community. There is also lots of mistrust by the mayority Mestiso (a term invented by Hispanics anyways)towards the very successful Chinese community that makes up 5% of the population.

Just look at soaps from Mexico, which I am sure have been exported- almost all the actors are "white", very few indegenous people get on camera, even fewer blacks, and then almost exclusively as servants. So racism is certainly alive and well in Latin America.

Where I see a difference is that its not that blood based- in practice, you can breed your way out, by looking "whiter", and if your family is rich enough, well then, who cares...

they didnt call the Irish "colored" - they were barbarian bog kerns, or whatever. There was definitely a "racial" overtone to hostility against them, in the US and in the UK. Theres a book that CG has recommended, I think, that I would like to read called "How the Irish became white"

The Irish had earned their place in the white cultures of the North and South by fighting their war for them. They had problems in the 1870's-80's because they were poor, but what wealth person of any race didn't hate the poor back then?

What I really don't understand is why they wouldn't want to box all the South/Southeast/East Asians up in the Pacific Northwest, next to Hongcouver?

Indeed. Racial purity seems to still be big in the Latin American upper classes and the more European you look the better off you tend to be. Looking like an Indian seems to normally be a ticket to the lower classes.

Not really though the pace of advancement would greatly slow. It is cheaper for the companies to import Asian engineers then bother to pay the taxes needed to educate native students to be engineers so they import them, pay them slightly less, then work the hell out of them. Part of it is many Asian cultures have a hard worth ethos and part of it is these people can only keep their visas if they stay employed so they work harder then the average citizen to keep their job. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that people who work harder for less money means more profit for the company so they love these people.

IIRC "wog" = "Worker on Government", initials that were stenciled onto the clothing of native workers in the British colonies when natives were "drafted" (in an almost medieval fashion) to work on government projects. The British supervisors would write home ranting about how stupid their "WOG" workers were, and soon the folks back home began using the term.

Actually, 'Gyp' or 'Gypped' is one of the few socially acceptable racial words left in canada, since after the war people couldn't say "I Got Jewed" unless they were polish in which case it was ok, so they had to make SOME kind of ethnic comment ( u understand) so now kids say 'I Got Gypped'.
