With Italians, it really depends on whom you ask. Many Black people are convinced Italians are Black. Many of the more "race-conscious" also consider Italians Black. Thben and I can pass as white, since we're Irish-Italian mutts.

Nor have I.

I have met stupid people who don't like Catholics and so don't like Italians. I've also heard the really old term "black Italians" which essential means Italians who were part Arab due to the brief Arab occupation of Southern most Italy; that resulted in their skin being slightly darker then your average European around 1900. Never really a major phrase though.

The point you are missing is that race is arbitrary (and changing). 150 years ago, the Irish weren't considered white. With Italians (or any Mediterranian), anyone who wasn't a racist would probably agree that we're obviously white, but there are still an awful lot of racists around. A friend of mine in Britain once heard someone screaming, "You Black Bastard!" and she looked around, and the dude getting screamed at was Greek. She had a WTF moment. The point being, for some people, only NW Europeans are truely white.
