Dime Store Dostoievski. I think the film resembles a Greek tragedy, and I love how it's made to feel timeless by the use of different makes of car, different styles of dress and that sneaky reference to 'The Maltese Falcon' at the end- oh my.

                    Admiral recommends:

Mon Oncle. Jacques Tati's best film, both incredibly funny, and a scathing/poignant critique of modern life. Yes, it is in French.
"Remember, there's good stuff in American culture, too. It's just that by "good stuff" we mean "attacking the French," and Germany's been doing that for ages now, so, well, where does that leave us?" - Elok

sikander - you honestly think nosferatu is better than metropolis? goddamn.

metropolis is better than most films today, and works outside of just historical artifact syndrome.

Why not check out some early american gems - hollywood wasn't always trash, after all.

                      Gun Crazy
                      Baby Doll
I Am a Fugitive From the Chain Gang
                      Scarface '32
                      Hell's Angels
                      Modern Times
                      The Apartment
                      Days of Wine and Roses

                      etc., etc...

Also, I'd like to see an apolytoner with the balls to watch "Blood of the Beast" - available as an extra on the "Eyes Without a Face" criterion dvd.

Nor is it today, except for kids who only "see" action movies and romantic comedies coming from the place.

                          Welcome to the club

Well, in my case, you could strike out the "Hollywood" there. I can't currently recall a single movie which I would not have regret wasting my time on after seeing it.

Downfall was very good, but sort of heavy.
The Motorcycle diaries is pretty good, the acting is commendable.

I would certainly recommend M. Its a classic film, and actually, for a film from 1930 it is far less dated than most movies form the 1950's. Seeing policing in action in Weimar Germany is a great experience.

I would also agree with Aguirre, thought it is really an aquired taste, so I would be cautious. And the original Solaris is certainly like 2001, a movie people either love, or despise. I would also be careful with it.

I'll plug Seven Samarui, it's long but worth it. Run Lola RUn is good.

I saw an unmentioned movie in Catalin (sp?) Spanish called Morir (o no), I wasn't very impressed thru the first half but it turned out to be a great film in the end (2.5 start, 4.75 star finish ).

Also Rebels of the Neon God is a pretty good film.
