Things are pretty volatile right now, so it just depends on the week, I guess. Wholesale gasoline prices are now $1.76 a gallon in the US (I guessed it was $2.40) and the retail prices are now $2.73 per gallon (I guessed it was $3). The difference between the wholesale price and the retail price is mostly taxes and in this instance, a little time lag. Most filling stations don't make much, if any money, on selling gasoline.

For Finland, $6 - $1.76 a gallon in Finland means roughly 70% of the money is going to taxes, most of which is punitive. A little margin for delivery, etc. and I guess the taxes represent something a little under 70%.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Not in the US. About half the difference in most states is delivery charges, operating expenses and profit.

Those costs will likely be higher in Europe.

OK, so Pekka is paying 60%+ in taxes (or a 150% tax rate or whatever) and I was correct in the first instance. As a resident of Maryland, you are paying only 16% on the same measure (42 cents a gallon, or an 18% tax markup).

It's normal those will make up a proportionally bigger share of the retail price if taxes are less.

Pekka, if you want "alternative" fuels, then you should support an even higher price for petroleum products.

Well, I believe the tax to be 75%. A reasonable rate that is. Of course the Greens wants this to be as high as possible, so that we reduce the amount of people driving cars = saves environment. These idiots can afford to think like this. Most peopel can't get to their jobs without cars. That's a fact right there. UNLESS YOU LIVE IN HELSINKI like most Greens do. Well guess what, not everyone lives there. I lived there, yeah it was convinient to use the subway, the busses etc. Step outside to the real world and they're gone.

It doens't piss me off how much everyone else pays for it, it pisses me off that our so called leaders don't even try to remedy this. They never do. They are lobbied up to their ass, so they just keep the status as it is. When the prices peaked, everyone in here knew, that the prices in here stays no matter if the oil prices go down. And that's exactly what happened.

Our PM said, well, we can't subsidize it because EU binds our hands, everyone else follows the rule and we have to do it also. Well guess what, everyone said, except Greens and lefties, that stfu idiot PM and do it, EU doesn't bind our hands, this is your stupid imagination, or .. no wait it's your excuse to work for the lobbying businesses you like to lick so hard.

That's what happens, the prices are not coming down, ever.

Scenario, oil goes to $65 per barrel. Price of gas 1 euro. Outrageous. Oil goes up to $90. Price of gas, 1.30 euros. Oil goes back to $70. Price gas still 1.30 euros. Oil again peaks at $80, gas price, 1.45 euros. Oil backs down, gas price STAYS.

Politicians say, well there's nothing we can do, Greens clap their hands in climax, everyone suffers. The price of the busses in mass transit again goes up, never coming down, it's always more expensive, yet their services go down, lines are being quit, prices go up, everyone suffers.

Yet, some idiot says, hey, this is becase we are following EU rules. Right... no it's not. I like to blame EU for lots of things, but this ain't one of them.

Say, what's the point if taking busses and what not to work, when you can drive cheaper. You go out there freeze your balls waiting for the bus that is always late, ohh you can fit in, well too bad. No, you take the car, that is cheaper, takes you where you need to go when you want. And STILL it's expensive as hell.

What's the point, when average person with a job has to work for 3 to 4 hours, just to make up the travel expenses (not even that far), and so that they can eat during the lunch hour? Exactly how are you going to afford buying any services, you can't even really afford your OWN SERVICES as a matter of fact.

How is any service business going to lift off in here, when on one can afford it? THat's right, they don't. And that's why foreign businesses stay the hell out, there's no capital, there's monster taxes, basically it's a no go. Then but ahh, some of the businesses, owned by the state, like booze stores, gambling etc, well, you can't even compete with them, the law protects their crap business they can't even do good. There won't be any competition, the prices will stay up, and domestic businesses if they are small, they can't afford lowering their prifces either, because it's not exactly easy for them either.

We are in a situation, where only the big can make a nice profit, and they use it to their advantage, lobbying the idiot fat politicians and promise them some spots later on when they retire in the board, to make a nice days of retirmenet, and then they publish ohhh we the least corrupted country, that's bec ause it's ****ing legal in here!

Freaking IDIOTS! EVeryone knows it too, but we are a nation where no one can do anything, because,, uuh ... ooh.. it's not the tradition to do so. Better just suffer and suck it up. Let the crooks and idiots run the country. Maybe there's something about us in the next Conan O'Brien so we can feel good about ourselves, or we can go out, drink ourselves into oblivion, wait 7 months for warm days to come and get into some really good fights with knives.

                Jeesh..

You're OK with it, I'm not. You see, there are lots of Greenies in here too who would love to see the gas in 6 euros per litre. They're fine with it. It has to be done.

                        Your position is exposed. Disgusting.

How much power do the greens have in Finland anyway? Over here they have like 4% of the votes so all they can do is basically whine and complain about being ignored by the social democrats. When the last government was formed they went to the press with "we must have a representative among the ministers or we will not support the social democrats!!!!", in the end they got nothing as usual.
It's candy. Surely there are more important things the NAACP could be boycotting. If the candy were shaped like a burning cross or a black man made of regular chocolate being dragged behind a truck made of white chocolate I could understand the outrage and would share it. - Drosedars

They don't have the real power, it's just sad that everyone is like them in the basic issues, lefties, social democrats (true enemy of the people), centre party... they're all the same.

Greenies are just a bit more louder. But their idiocy is what reflects this country. The true power lies only 0.1% to the other direction, been SUPER GREEN in everyones eyes who haven't been pumped full of idiocy semen.

Hey that's nice. A reasonable argument. If you're not supporter of ULTRA LEFT, you're a nazi.

Unlike these enemis of the people, I want the people to have the money to support themselves. Not a model where states leeches the money and uses it in paper pushing idiots, building the 6000 trillion tower of peace in luxemburg and other **** no one cares about.

But you being a commie, I guess you will never understand. It's too bad, I really like you other than that little detail. When it starts, I have to put you in jail for being a commie traitor, but don't worry, I make sure you are treated according to the laws and when it's over, I release you. Unlike most other commies.
