New York's a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.
Give me Boston, Chicago, or San Francisco any day.

Wow, so a small economy is growing faster than a saturated one. So, by that line of thinking, China's economy is better than the UK's cause the growth rate is better?
If I were investing, yes, I would invest in Chinese companies with insane growth rates, and not the saturated monoliths.
So, which is more impressive, a small city growing fast, or a large, established City bucking nation-wide population patterns and growing back strong?
The question is "so, which is more livable? A large, old City with an abysmal growth rate and job growth rate, or the fastest growing city in Canada with soaring job growth and incomes?"
The answer should be obvious for any sane people. That's why Calgary has grown incredibly fast over the past 30 years, and New York City hasn't. Simple facts.
New York City is an institution, and a tourist destination. I'd reckon most people would not want to live there. I know I wouldn't...

You're right -- I guess I should move to inner-city Detroit or Washington, DC.
Please, DO!
Hmm, well that happened a few years ago...
And just last week I was all of like 20 feet from Vincente Fox...
Wow, few years ago. Here it's a yearly occurence.
See, this is why New York City would suck. The locals are, frankly, crazy and full of egomaniacs.
We don;t sugar coat it for the peons.
You have an overcrowded city with lots of history, congratulations.
Thank you. It also happens to be the financial capital of the US.
The fact that its population growth is lower than the birth rate, and considering it has such high foreign immigration, the simple fact is a lot of Americans leave New York every year. Why would they leave the greatest city EVAH?
Why don't we ask Boris why he left New York for the west coast...
Cause he found greener pastures. Good for him. You forgot to ask what he was doing in NYC in the first place (him not being a local).
That is the great thing about NYC, a constant flow of people. IN NYC you make it, or you don't, but you sure as hell have the opportunities to try.
If that is too much for a person like you, well, tough cookies. Can't stand the fire, stay out of the kitchen.

The reason it has a constant flow of people is because potential immigrants hear about how great it is from crazies like you. Then they move there, and become disenchanted, and move elsewhere.
Housing costs have soared 77% over the past 5 years in New York City...why on earth would people willingly move there.

I must say, GePap, your argument that cities like New York are better to live in because they're less safe is intriguing. I'm starting to understand the psyche of the people who move there.
What a unique bunch!

If NYC were so undesirable, why would housing costs have ballooned 77%?
Immigrants move there because they can find a community (168 languages are spoken in the County of Queens), because they can find low paying jobs (like in the 35,000 plus restaurants), and if they are wealthy ones, because they are working at any of the globe spanning financial corporations that make NYC their Headquarters.
Again, if you are a boring person who fears constant change, please, stay out of NYC. You'll get run over. You have to be quick witted or ambitious to make it here. Remember what Sinatra said.

All of the interesting people move to New York City. That's another compelling argument you've made.
New Yorkers are very interesting, I'll give you that, but not in a favorable way...

Doesn't matter-the prices would only go up if the market was red hot, meaing high demand. Meaning desirability.

You are like someone trying to argue that the bumper cars are the greatest attraction at an ammusement park because they are really crowded and popular, and on top of it safer than the giant roller coasters...
Most people of course have the common sense to know the Grand Roller coasters are the grand jewels of the park, even if lost of visitors are afraid to ever get on them.

Actually, that sounds identical to your argument about New York.

It's more like I'm saying the best theme parks are the ones with great rides, lower admission fare, and lines not 10000 people long -- even if their name isn't the most famous.

And GePap is saying that they have a lower admission and shorter lines because they are less popular, and they are less popular because they suck more.

That makes sense
Not really, especially if it's not as convenient to go to and doesn't have nearly the marketing budget as the bigger parks.

Except that our park is so busy because its rides are without a doubt the best. Again, people voting with their feet.
The difference in magnitude between what there is to see or do in Calgary vs NYC is, well, not even funny.
Which is why the only times a place like Calgary is ever mentioned within the same sentence as NYC is in surveys like this.
I must say thought, having been to Vienna, which surpassed Calgary in this survey, if that is true, Calgary is even more boring than I thought.

Asher, you spoke about university's being better in Canada then in the US. Of the top 20 universities world wide 11 are in the US (4 in California), 4 in the UK, 1 each for China, Switzerland, Singapore, Australia, and Japan. Canda got a goose egg though they did manage #21 and #37.
I wanted to compare the average SAT score between Alberta and the California but I could find any statistics for Alberta. Can anyone come up with some average test scores?

No, I didn't -- but you and GePap are going a long way to showing that is the case anyway.
I said cheap post-secondary. Reading comprehension is something that public schools in Canada apparently do better with.

SAT is an American thing, we don't use such a stupid system in Canada.

Comparing NYC and Calgary is like apples and oranges. Both are great for different reasons, but none can compare to NYC. Love it or hate it its one of a kind.

No SAT in Canada. That is, only kids who are planning on going to US universities will take it (i.e., not many).
