Canada has a much lower PPP per capita income then the US and PPP is the only valid way to compare income across international lines. http://www.worldbank.org/data/databytopic/GNIPC.pdf

Tax rates are another questionable issue. Corporate tax rates are lower in most states of the US then in Canada while income tax rates are very close (45.4% to 43.4%). The income tax rate varies very widely in the US though and some states don't even have an income tax so it really depends on where you live.

Quality of life is another questionable one which is highly subjective depending upon what you like. The per person pollution rate is likely very close in both the US and Canada while many states (California, Washington, Hawaii) have environmental laws more stringent then you'll find in Canada.

Lastly schools largely depend upon which state and which city you live in. My school district did a great job and the college attendance rate was above 90%. Also I'll stack up my state's higher education system against Alberta's or even all of Canada. Both the UC and the CSU systems are world class.

Given the generally high rate of immigration into NYC, its obviously a more desireable place for more people to live in than Calgary. I always thought you were some sort of believers in the markets. Well, people vote with thier feet to go to NYC, well, at least the ones that matter...
Look at the immigration rates to Calgary, I guarantee they're higher than that to NYC.

It has everything to do about it.

It's about the livability of a city, which doesn't just include munincipal governments, it goes to provincial and federal as well. You need to look at the big picture of living in a city, not just pick and choose so it looks favorable to New York...

                    You missed the point completely.

Look at the average debt load of the average New Yorker compared to someone from Calgary. It's not even close.

Look at the average expendable income compared to the consumer price index. It's not even close.

It's not just about income. People in the US make more but also have higher costs of living...that's a very well known fact...

I lived in California for 4 years, in a very nice well-to-do Bay Area suburb. I know first hand the difference in quality in education, and I can tell you it is not even close to the quality of Calgary's.

And you would be wrong. Which is no surprise.

21% of Calgary's population was foreign born in 2001

35.9% of NYC's population foreign born in 2000

                              • Immigration is not Foreign Immigration.

                                Sorry, GePap. But nice try.

How it works in Canada is foreign immigrant either come to Vancouver or Toronto, and then people from all over Canada come to Calgary once they realize it's actually a better place.

Cities like New York and Toronto have higher international profiles for foreign immigrants.

Not to mention jobs in Calgary tend to require more in terms of degrees, etc. It'll be easier to find a job as a foreign immigrant with no certified degree in New York or Toronto than here. Once they get qualified, they can upgrade.
