  • Asher, first you compare U of C to the University of Chicago and now Calgary to NYC.

    When will you learn?

It's a valid point to be made.

New York is historic and huge, but that doesn't make it a better place to live.

Once Americans get off themselves and look at the situation realistically, they'll see why international organizations repeatedly put Canada on top or near the top on quality of life and livability studies. Denial only lasts for so long.

And University of Calgary's compsci > University of Chicago's compsci.

And, remember, I won this argument last time as well -- you clowns asserted UofC = University of Chicago. A simple google result shows UofC most commonly refers to the University of Calgary.

      • Its trully sad to see Asher trying so hard to make a little burg in the middle of nowhere Canada seem in any way a comparison to NYC.

        Pathetic as well.

Give it up Asher. Calgary is exactly like Cleveland, Cincinnatti, and other places of its kind- small, quiet cities where nothing of real interest to anyone else in the world ever happens.

NYC is like London or Tokyo, or Berlin. Great international metropolises pulsing with excitement and life and where history is all around you and happening all the time. If you are too weak willed to survive in that kind of jungle, well, fine. Most people do seek the quiet, drab, gray life anyways. Guess why Calgary came up so high in that little survey.

You're terrible at this argument thing, GePap.

This thread is about livability, not visibility. Visibility is why September 11th happened in New York, while on the same day I had a normal day.

This isn't about being famous or huge, it's about which city is best to live in. The fact that New York has a problem with being a terrorist target, and the whole US federal government being what they are, and the crime rate, etc. don't make it the best place to live.

So, while your patriotism is heroic, it's clouding your judgement.

The topic is livability, I suggest you stick to it. Your strawmen may work on pansy social sciences students, but we're too smart for that here.

What's truly sad is you squirming around just because yet another study confirmed that New York is not the center of the universe. You guys are worse than people from Toronto in Canada. Your only argument against this livability study is "Calgary is in the middle of nowhere". Impressive, but inadequate. Like New York City.

There's more to life than being packed like sardines in a crime-ridden scuzzy city.

              Sorry, GePap. But nice try.

How it works in Canada is foreign immigrant either come to Vancouver or Toronto, and then people from all over Canada come to Calgary once they realize it's actually a better place.

Cities like New York and Toronto have higher international profiles for foreign immigrants.

Not to mention jobs in Calgary tend to require more in terms of degrees, etc. It'll be easier to find a job as a foreign immigrant with no certified degree in New York or Toronto than here. Once they get qualified, they can upgrade.
NYC is a metropolis of 8 Million people. Calgary is a City of less than one Million.

Hell manhattan alone has 1.5 Million people in it, 50% more than Calgary. 50% of its residents have bachelors degree's or more.

Interestingly enough, it has 2.2 Million non-farm jobs in it, meaning at least 700,000 people flow into Manhattan daily to work there.

So, almost as many people communute into Manhattan Island daily as live in Calgary. And you want to compare the two???

New York is bigger. Everyone knows that. It's what, 8x the size? It's huge. It's massive.

Which explains why you're avoiding any real argument. You mentioned that people are immigrating to New York City, but their growth rate is actually pathetically small. It seems almost saturated. For all of the foreign immigrants who keep moving there, it seems people seem to be moving away as well.

My point was Calgary is the fastest growing city in Canada, and it's growing far faster than New York is. That says something about the desirability of people to live there, doesn't it?

You can't instantly snap your fingers and make Calgary have 8 million people. We can't even cope with the current growth rate...

But if the growth rate continues as it has for the past 30 years, Calgary is going to be a huge metropolis pretty soon. A rich one, too.

It's not just about income. People in the US make more but also have higher costs of living...that's a very well known fact...
You know what purchasing power parity means, right? All of those numbers were given in PPP so cost of living is already factored in.

The average household net worth in Canada is C$237,163 with the median net worth being C$136,600. The US has an average house hold net worth of just under $500,000 and a median household net worth of $100,980.

Converting both of those figures into US Dollars results in Canadians having an average household net worth of $200,623.87 and a median of $115,548.70. So Canada does have a higher median but a lower average (less then half).

                    • I'm not talking about all of Canada, nor all of the US. Canada has some real ****hole provinces in terms of economy -- actually, most of them.

You can compare Alberta, or preferably Calgary, to other cities. PEI, Newfoundland, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, etc. shouldn't be involved...they're huge drags on the averages, which is why the average is lower.

Canada's largest telecope is just south of Calgary, I guess I ought to go find a picture of it. It certainly has a lot do with with livability.

                        • Who wants to live like sheep in a pen? Safe but boring?

NYC is the center of the UNiverse. Next time part of your city is blocked off cause 160 World Leaders came into town then you can talk.

NYC is the grand metorpolis of the Grand Empie that sits atop the world. As such it has the place once held by London, or Constantinople. It is "The City", which is acknowlegded by the fact that the basis of the census is NYC.

I don;t care if the City is dirty, or still more dangerous than Canada (though crime has fallen by 75% and is at rates not seen since the 1960's), or that its centrality to the image and power of the US makes it the biggest target of all. It is still without a doubt a far greater City than little ol' Calgary.

Its funny to see the provincials get pissy when one simply states the fact that you live in a grander place. It may be home to massive income inequality (the top 5% in Manhattan make 52 times what the bottom 5% make), but in the end, its still a far greater place than any other City in North America.

You're right -- I guess I should move to inner-city Detroit or Washington, DC.

Hmm, well that happened a few years ago...

And just last week I was all of like 20 feet from Vincente Fox...

See, this is why New York City would suck. The locals are, frankly, crazy and full of egomaniacs.

You have an overcrowded city with lots of history, congratulations.

The fact that its population growth is lower than the birth rate, and considering it has such high foreign immigration, the simple fact is a lot of Americans leave New York every year. Why would they leave the greatest city EVAH?

Why don't we ask Boris why he left New York for the west coast...

Wow, so a small economy is growing faster than a saturated one. So, by that line of thinking, China's economy is better than the UK's cause the growth rate is better?

As for Calgary being a huge metropolis, HA! I doubt I will live to see Calgary hit 4 Million.

NYC grows up and down. We haven't even reached the highest population ever, which was actually about in 1950. Better proof is that fact that NYC and Chicago were the ONLY two American cities to see thier population grow. Most US cities continue to decline as people move to the suburbs. Not NYC, which has people moving back in.

So, which is more impressive, a small city growing fast, or a large, established City bucking nation-wide population patterns and growing back strong?
