Yes, if you let the companies scatter crap all over God's creation you will have problems.

Part of the oil sands development has been the requirement that the extractors put the byproducts back in the holes they dig up and cover them over with the growy things.

You have to do this when the plan is to dig up a large parcel of land, like the size of a good sized state or small European country.

Otherwise the hole, as viewable from orbit, would be large.

Please commence comments on the true nature of Alberta.

From what I'm led to believe, even refilling the holes doesn't matter too much. I don't know why, though it's still better thn leaving an open pit.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

I would imagine there could be danger if industrial byproducts were improperly disposed of on or near aquifers.

Hmmm. I should read up on that.

I am certain about the requirements for surface reclamation. So I have not been concerned. I have never checked into water table effects.

The dug up areas are quite remote. The only settlements in the areas so far under development are creatures of the development, so it is possible they have received inadequate attention. Unlikely, but possible.

The strip mines can be rehabilitated though it is expensive and often the companies don't save the top soil so the replanted "forest" ends up dying due to lack of proper soil. If they were forced to scrape off the top soil keep it separate then place it back on top once they've back filled the hole then it wouldn't be so bad.

In other news, there was a story out today about how Ford and Chevy are getting beat up pretty bad in their truck and SUV market.

I say GOOD ! Maybe it will teach these companies a lesson and respond to once to what consumers ****ing want.

Toyota Prius is flying off the lot, turnaround time for a Prius is down to about 4 hours. That means as soon as the dealer gets it, it's gone in 4 hours.

Toyota and Honda are recording record sales quarters.

Both of these companies proactively built more fuel efficiency into their cars and also cars that burn cleaner.

              Our industry is so disfunctional.

                That's part of it.

The development companies have been forced to figure out how to reclaim what they ravage. We don't want to have to put up with a Wisconsin sized hole in one part of our province, and a RI sized one in another.

There is a fair sized community of Green inclined people around the province. I doubt they would shut up if reclamation started to go pear shaped.

I shall take my cues from the market, and right now the market is suggesting that alternatives might be advantageous, if they can be had relatively easily.
How well does the market function with misleading information? If OPEC has been lying about their oil reserves, then there could be very nasty consequences. Not apocalyptic, but more than enough to make us wish we'd done more with alternatives now.

Interesting stat I just heard on the new.

In the last 12 months, more bicycles were sold in the US than cars, and this number is the most new bicycles sold since the 1970s oil crunch.

                      Oil: Offshore-Drilling Debate

Oct. 10, 2005 issue - Amid worries over rising fuel costs, congressional Republicans are pressing for a vote as early as this week to roll back a moratorium on oil and gas exploration off the nation's coasts. The move could prompt a showdown between President George W. Bush, whose administration is pressing for coastal oil exploration, and his brother Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who opposes offshore drilling in his state.

Last week the House Resources Committee approved legislation that would immediately lift a ban on drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, other coastal waters and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Although the bill would let coastal states maintain a buffer zone for oil rigs, an amendment would allow natural-gas drilling to come within five miles of the Florida coast. Governor Bush opposes the bill for fear that it could "encourage drilling in protected areas." A senior administration official in Washington, who requested anonymity due to the delicate subject matter, tells NEWSWEEK, "It's something that we are reviewing." Neither Jeb Bush's office nor the White House would say if the governor had recently discussed the issue with the president. Yet some opponents of the plan worry that oil may be thicker than blood when it comes to the governor's clout. "The president is respectful of Jeb's position," says Rep. Mark Foley, a Florida Republican who opposes offshore drilling. "But this is a nation of 50 states. You have to make the best decision for everybody, not just one state."

                      • Why not just leave big holes and put all that extra water in there that came from the melting polar caps!

Yeah, that's an idea. Let's dig a hole three times the size of usa - three kilometers deep an put the water there

Well now. Surely, if you can figure out that the Saudis are giving out bad information, market participants who are "on the ground" can figure it out too.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat.
