In 1235AD Bulgaria defeated Epiros and Solun was under Bulgarian rule for a short period of time.

In 19th century there was a signifficant Slavic/Bulgarian population there, hence Bulgarian claims at the time.

I have no idea ot that thing on the San Stefano map is. It looks like a fire with the colors of the Bulgarian flag. The green territories are territories with Bulgarian population.

                  • Ah, after Klokotnica battle. I didn't know they managed to capture Thessalonike, though. I\ve learned something, thanks.

                      • Actually the map posted of Mexico is a bit off since it is based on the current US state boundaries which did not exist back then.

                        Here's a more accurate one:

The Confederacy of Central America was briefly (for a year) a part of Mexico also.

Don't forget the Poles and Latinos.
It seems, though, that in the case of lands north to Bostons, it's the French who create the catholic majority. It's a suprise to me, I didn't know they were so numerable there.

Btw, Heresson, does this map mean that there is a county in the USA with a jewish majority?

                            There are probably a couple.
dont think so. Kings County, NY may have come close, but it never quite got there. And went into decline from about the 1965. though it may be on the upswing again. Nor are a majority in Nassau County, NY (Catholics are, or were) nor in Sullivan County, nor in Dade County FL, or anywhere else.

                            • 1. Manhattan - as Gepap points out whites are only 70% of manhattan (and yes, virtually all Jews in Manhattan are white) There are significant numbers of White Protestants in Manhattan, though small and diminishing numbers of white "ethnics". I very much doubt that Jews are a majority of Manhattan.

                              2. Herzl - a dreamer, who talked of a Jewish state based on the seven hour day, a Jewish state speaking multiple languages, a Jewish state in Uganda or El Arish in Sinai - I wouldnt consider something he confided to his diary as a Zionist "plan".

                              3. United States

During the American revolution, there were plans to incorporate Quebec, Nova Scotia, and the British West Indies.

At the end of the Mexican American war maximalists wanted to take the Sonora, Baja California, and the other northern states of Mexico as well as what was actually annexed.

                              4. United Kingdom - shouldnt we be going with maximalists, not just how big the empire actually was? IIUC there were folks who wanted to annex Afghanistan, the Congo, etc.

                              5. French Catholics in the northeast. During the late 19th century they came from Quebec to work in the mills of New England, and their descendants are still prominent in New Hampshire, parts of Maine, and even some neighborhoods in Greater Boston.

No. The empire wasn't really part of the Greater United Kingdom. The British Isles, Ireland and parts of France (and Rockall!) are probably the limit.
