Not quite as time-worn of a procedure as quitting "to spend more time with your family," but...I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Now an assistant to Brown is claiming he was considering leaving this winter anyway. So it looks like he'll just quit after being allowed to lay low for a bit.

Firing him wouldn't hurt the situation at all. In fact, it would send a message that perhaps the administration really took seriously the complaints about his bungling. Chertoff sent him off with praise, dammit. That's not a firing.
