I don't think so. It will harden factions, as those who disliked or hated Bush before are absolutely confirmed in their worst fears while right-wingers will just cover their eyes, plug their ears, and go "lalalaaaaa we can't hear you!"

            • No, he wasn't sacked. He was just "sent back to DC." As if the administration would have the balls to sack him. That would be admitting he wasn't doing a "heck of a job."

              • "Sent back to DC" is effectively the same thing as being sacked. Not quite as time-worn of a procedure as quitting "to spend more time with your family," but...
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. • No, he was only recalled from the on-site efforts:

"Brown will head back to Washington from Louisiana to oversee the big picture, the official said."

Now an assistant to Brown is claiming he was considering leaving this winter anyway. So it looks like he'll just quit after being allowed to lay low for a bit.

                  Chicken****s.

                  • "Oversee the big picture" is an empty portfolio. He's fired at some time in the future.

I don't think it would be good management to have the position vacant at this time, but it is important to have the ineffective person removed from the situation.

No, they'll blame the underlings this time. Novak in yesterdays WaPo was going hard on both Brown and Chertoff "too many lawyers" Rumsfeld is the only teflon man in the cabinet.

Brown is still on the payroll and will be sitting there collecting money. That he will be doing nothing isn't saying anything, as that's what he seems to have been doing before.

Firing him wouldn't hurt the situation at all. In fact, it would send a message that perhaps the administration really took seriously the complaints about his bungling. Chertoff sent him off with praise, dammit. That's not a firing.

As I said, it looks like their just going to let him quietly quit once things have died down.

                        • That's a good move by the administration. It's not like Bush is obligated to do things in the way that you prefer -- i.e., the least favorable to his administration.
