The failure to respond to the crisis within 72 hours caused many deaths, particularly among the already ill people who ran out of medical supplies and subsequently died. Add to that number the young and elderly who died from dehydration and lack of food. How do we know this? Because of news reports describing these situations.

        • If the projected death toll is accurate, this is the worst disaster in our history.

          • If the death toll goes over 3,000 it will be the worst disaster in history. The worst right now is 1906 San San Francisco earthquake where 3,000 died, and of course the 9-11 attacks. I am not happy with both the state and federal response to this diaster. It seems like we have clueless idiots running DHS and FEMA. After seing the chaos of New Orleans I am going to always make sure I have 5 days worth of food and water and my own evcuation plan in case I have to. I just hope the government can change its ways before the next disaster or terror attack.

              • IIRC, the official death toll of the Galveston hurricane was 5,000, not that it really matters.

                  • You're not the only one making that or similar mistakes. On The Weather Channel they said the 1935 Labor Day hurricane was the worst ever to strike the U.S. in terms of death toll. It certainly was a bad one, but it was only the second worst.

Florida was almost a French territory, but for a hurricane. Admiral Ribault set out from Fort Caroline (present day Jacksonville) for San Augustín, and trapped the Spanish in the harbor. Then a hurricane struck, destroying the French fleet. During the storm, the Spanish marched north, captured Fort Caroline, then headed back and massacred the survivors of the French fleet. So ended French Hugenot colonial attempts in La Florida.

                    • I am just hoping the the estimated death toll of 10,000 will be lower in the end. We wont know untill they can search house to house because they said a lot of people who started got trapped in their houses. Anther thing I dont really understain is the people who still are staying in New Orleans that dont want to leave their houses. I can under stand the people with pets who dont want to leave them behind, but if I had a pet I would hike out of the city if I had to with my pet, not just sit there. But that is me.

Quite agree, a MOBIOS posting doesn't reach the quality of a Ned posting. Ned at least made some kind of sense when he argued. He even bothered to find and supply links that could support him.
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

                          • They've opened up two morgues with capacity of about 5,000 each. Add in some people who will be identified and buried independently and the deaths in the surrounding areas of the Gulf Coast besides, and you can see that the 10,000 - 20,000 number is what they're planning for.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. • In other signs of FEMA's level of competance...

                              Tuesday, September 6, 2005; Posted: 11:29 p.m. EDT (03:29 GMT)

(CNN) -- Add geography to the growing list of FEMA fumbles.

A South Carolina health official said his colleagues scrambled Tuesday when FEMA gave only a half-hour notice to prepare for the arrival of a plane carrying as many as 180 evacuees to Charleston.

But the plane, instead, landed in Charleston, West Virginia, 400 miles away.

It was not known whether arrangements have been made to care for the evacuees or transport them to the correct destination.

A call seeking comment from FEMA was not immediately returned.

                              • FEMA's incompetence matches the same level of surreality of Abu Gharib.

Nobody could have EVER imagined either case to have ever happened in America.

Yet both have and it still boggles the mind how it has happened.

It almost feels like someone is TRYING to f up.
