    • So the Superdome seems to have become the Superdoom. Will Katrina and the Waves be on stage tonight?

Anyway, if they are evacuating, where will they all go, and how? I think there's a mall and a nearby large hotel, the Hyatt Regency that can be reached without going outside, but can it house that many people? I the windows are blown in, only the corridors can be used.

      • Doesn't seem all that bad yet, a few small holes. Worst of the storm is yet to come though I believe.

        • I don't think it would be a practical action to evacuate to a highrise.

          • There have been a few tears in the fabric of the Superdome. The structural intregrity has not been damaged at all, according to CNN.

Nothing to worry about, except to the people right below the holes.

            • The CNN Breaking News things says:

Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans, on east side of city, under 5 to 6 feet of water after pumps fail, mayor says.
Doesn't sound great if the pumps are starting to fail before the surge is due to hit.

                • Weather Channel is chatting with a guy in a nursing home a little east of New Orleans that sits 27 feet above sea level a half mile inland.

The entire first floor of the building is underwater.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

                    • A Swedish MD who is working at a hospital in New Orleans was interviewed live on Swedish Radio news. He was very calm, when he said things like "The windows of the hospital has broken", "cars outside has been smashed" and "debris is flying viciously all around the house, causing severe injuries to anyone outdoors", but I suppose that's the profesional coolness you would expect from a doctor.

                        • I don't know if anyone has brought it up, but even if New Orleans was spared, and this thing managed to somehow kill no one anywhere, the loss of business income and falling behind schedule in work, such as loading/unloading ships, would be substantial.

                          • My sis and family evacuated out of the city yesterday at 1 pm. They have a place on Grand Isle, which is probably a goner.

Haven't heard anything about the levees.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
