Mayor Ray Nagin ordered an immediate evacuation Sunday for all of New Orleans
am I an idiot? As predicted this storm really hasn't done much damage or killed many people.
It's you guys who need to stop listening to these doom and gloom "experts" who say the entire city would be destroyed. I knew that wouldn't happen.
The Hurricane veered. It was the "better" side of Katrina that hit New Orleans.
If it had hit where it was predicted with the strength of a Category 5, things would be a lot different.

Power's out over a wide area, and I head on TWC that New Orleans may be without power for a month.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...
Bruce Willis is quite entertaining when you want to see a movie where you don't need to use your brain, though, I can't for the moment remember one where he tried to nuke a hurricane.
I guess that 200 times the current production capacity of electric energy is a little bit more than a nuke.
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
It's also on the delta of the major continental river in North America, and as such was a logical place to build a city for the colonists.
There's quite a few cities like that that are quite susceptible to even slight rises in water levels. Cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, London, Antwerp, Hamburg in Europe, New York, Philadelphia or San Fransisco in the US, Rio de Janeiro or Quayaquil in South America, Lagos or Cairo in Africa, Sidney in Australia, Dacca, Hong Kong or Karachi in Asia. All would suffer massively from a 20ft+ rise in water level. Admittedly not all are in the path of hurricanes, but it's an unfortunate circumstance that the the most fertile land (though not in the case of the bayous I guess), with best access to early trade routes are also thouse closest to sea level that are susceptible to these things.

Oceanfront property in Arkansas available for 350,000$ for two acres! Buy it while it's cheap!
If I could sell an acre for $175,000 I wouldn't ever have to lift a finger for the rest of my life.
I think some lakeside lots around Hot Springs are pretty high. $30K? Probably too high. I wouldn't be interested in buying them, so I don't remember.

New Orleans looks pretty rough, but there will be a massive recovery effort. Things will return to normal, sooner than we expect.
The weather here in Camden has been mostly cloudy with enjoyable temperatures and light wind in the past hour. I think we're right near the very edge of all the clouds that the hurricane encompasses, or something. No rain.
As Mississippi and Appalachia get rained on, all that rain will drain into the Mississippi (River) and go right back through New Orleans...will this be a major concern?
Another bad thing will be listening to the nimrods that stayed behind to write blogs, and/or booze it up, talking about what a wonderfully exciting experience it was.
A perfect chance to thin the herd, wasted.

All you doom-mongerers should feel ashamed of yourselves - it wasn't exactly a 'storm in a teacup' but it certainly wasn't a major catastrophe either...

New Orleans is there, that doesn't make it all is well.
Contrary to some people's thoughts.
