The sidebar is one piece of a very useful application.

If Konfabulator had a comparable desktop search I'd use that.

You'd think someone with an IQ of over 150 would have a better grasp of the English language by now.
        that was awesome
I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.

I'm not sure if you can call it spyware.

There are some tools that require sending some data to Google to get results, but Google Desktop has those disabled by default and it's got a very clear, plain-english warning that enabling those features will require sending some data to Google.

Aside from the Sidebar option, here's whats new in 2.0:

            Quick Find
With Quick Find, you can launch an application just by typing its name. You can also search your hard drive instantly as you type a few letters, without having to go to a web browser.

            Better Search in Outlook
Are you the type of person who just lives in Outlook? Rejoice - with the new Outlook Search Toolbar, you can search Outlook without ever having to leave it. If you search from the Toolbar, your email results will be displayed in an Outlook results window. And Google Desktop is even more comprehensive, so you can search:

            # Outlook Contacts
            # Outlook Appointments
            # Outlook Tasks
            # Outlook Notes
            # Outlook Journal

            Even More
            # Better filtering lets you filter results by sender, filetype, time and more
            # Search network drives and specific drives and folders
            # Search your Gmail even when you're not online
            # Search MSN Messenger chats in addition to AOL Instant Messenger chats
            # Encrypt your index for stronger security
            # Updated Developer SDK with Sidebar and Search APIs

So then you would use the floating deskbar or deskbar instead, or turn that off altogether and just doubleclick the trayicon when you need to search for something.

                Some people, honestly...

It never ceases to amaze me that people are so selfish to criticize having additional options available, just because they don't have a desire for it themselves.

Oh really? I thought you were the one calling stuff like that bloatware.

It's bloatware when it gets in the way and balloons the size of the product.

Google's a really innovative company and surely deserved their success.

OTOH, they should also keep on working on things like Picasa. There's still things to improve.

Like how Opera is still the smallest browser download and you can turn off the mail and chat functionality?

Smallest browser download doesn't matter, is uses more RAM when running.

That, and I don't want to take precious resources away from my games. Yeah, I'm sure I can close it, but that's more clicks than I'm willing to make.
