      Hence the "tomorrow" bit.

does anyone use instant messangers anymore?

I never do, but maybe because I'm an antisocial git. I used them when they first came out in the 90's. But the gimmick has worn off.

It's an absolute necessity for me, everyone uses them and all my friends/family are all over North America.

At work it's the #1 communications tool between coworkers, the corporate IM network.

wouldn't it be easier to talk to your coworkers face to face

I can't do that since I work all over the city. I use a cell phone to communicate with my coworkers.

I love instant messenger. If Google was the first company to browbeat AOL, MSN, Yahoo et al so that the Google IM could have cross-platform communication, I might have even joined in the Google circle jerks. Alas, all they are doing is further diluting the field by providing an IM that will undoubtedly have no new features other than a handy Google search bar built in.

IBM doesn't have all of its employees in one building, alas. We only have 2,500 at our building, the other 350,000 are elsewhere. Face to face is a bit impractical.

I find email over a corporate network to be just as quick as IMing .
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

I bet you don't use Lotus Notes.

Only time we use email is for official correspondence that requires a "paper trail".

I'm sure Google will do something innnovative enough to make it worth using over the other Messengers.

And hopefully, all will migrate and the other evil programs will die off.

Currently, all of them are full of bloat. I sometimes have to use MSN because it's so popular (and then there's the Civ2MP, which pretty much requires ICQ if you try to play here).

                          I love instant messenger.
IRC owns all IM'ers. You could try that.

wouldn't it be easier to talk to your coworkers face to face
It's faster to type than talk.

IRC and IM are different markets -- IM is for people with social lives, IRC is for people without social lives.

                              It's funny because it's true.
