I demand that a REAL July 4th thread be posted instead of this hijacked MrFun thread with an agenda.

The tragedy of total war, unfortunately. Sometimes a positive victory for a great cause comes with a high cost -- look at World War II.

For instance, some people still argue to this day that we should not have nuked part of Japan in the final days of World War II.

And here's to our kick-ass revolution that let the world know that "divine right of monarchs" was/is bullsh!t.

Is this like those people who say Columbus discovered the world was round?

Divine right of monarches was an outdated concept by the 1700s. You know, this thing called the Reformation happened?

The concept was still alive and well during most of the 18th century, Imran. I assume you mean the Enlightenment as opposed to the Reformation? The US was the first government to be structured along the ideals of the Enlightenment.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

No big deal. Atlanta is a city that tears itself down every 20-odd years anyway. Grant just hastened the next revitalization.

What the fine slaveholders and confederates of Gainsville, TX did in 1862 to suspected Unionists in a kangaroo court convened because a the common folk had the temerity to protest the slaveholders getting draft deferments. Google "Great Hanging" and Gainsville, TX. They were lauded for this mass lynching in the state - the high quality of confederate supporters.

France was an absolute monarchy before its own revolution happened in the 1780s and 1790s.

Prussia was also a monarchical state. Great Britain was the European nation that had a form of monarchical government that relied much less on the idea of "divine right of monarchs." But the "divine right of monarchs" existed through the 1830s.
