The first time Christianity came to China it ended up causing the Taiping Rebellion civil war. It's understandable why the government is prudent.

Actually that's the second time Christianity came to China. In the 8th Century Nestorian Christianity came to China and several aristocrats converted including the Emperor's Nephew. That nephew later tried to over throw his uncle but failed so Christians were blamed for the rebellion and hunted down. If the Christian faction would have won then there would have been a Christian Emperor and likely much of China would have converted since people always try to copy those in power.
