All racial groups have been enslaved by others at some point in history. To think you deserve maltreatment because of the past actions of someone in your group is ridiculous.

Well it explains why the welsh/scots/irish have 'beef' with the english

And yes its ridiculous - but i think having empathy for people whom you know you've exploited in the past, even indirectly, helps you understand why they may be angry against you even now.

So i'm willing to make some allowances, but there are limits and maybe this 'article' is trying to point to that?

To think you deserve maltreatment because of the past actions of someone in your group is ridiculous.
We have something in PNG called 'shameing'. Its a cultural and effective way of ensuring you treat people well. I think if we could adopt a simular tradition into our modern lives it would help with many of our social problems.

If we all knew our actions would have a long term repurcusions that we or our children could be held accountable to, maybe we would actualy behave better to one another. So i carry the 'shame' from my forefathers, and i endevour to ensure i dont pass on any to my descendants.

Just out of interest, how many people actually think charity funds from the lottery should actually go to football clubs in wealthy areas in a nation where we still have waaaaay too many kids living below the poverty line?

A quick word of warning- the first whinging right-wing knee-jerker snivelling about how "It's the principle that matters" will be abused emphatically.

You don't understand Laz.- this is the Cheshire stockbroker belt, where footballers and merchant bankers are forced to live in 6 and 10 bedroom houses, deprived of interaction with colourful ethnic types and reduced to having to send the maid out to get Indian takeaways or having to have Thai food faxed to them.

Their children suffer from being sent far away to boarding schools and having to go on foreign holidays, unable to socialize with the variegated inhabitants of exotic towns such as Liverpool, Manchester and Stoke on Trent.

Some of these people may not ever have had an Afro-Caribbean or Anglo-Asian friend or acquaintance in their life, and you wish to take away the opportunity for them to lose to skilled ethnically diverse football teams from inner city areas ?

One thing about Lottery grants that the article doesn't mention is that community projects don't get 100% grants, usually it is less than 50%. The local group has to raise the rest itself, either from local authority grants (quite hard to get because the local authorities don't usually have a lot to spare) or fundraising.

Projects that are aimed at ethnic minorities have access to more sources of funding than those simply aimed at local sports facilities, so it is easier.

The real reason they didn't get a grant is likely to be that the grant fund was oversubscribed and they weren't felt to be "needy" enough. But to actually get any money at all a bunch of locals would have had to get off their backsides and put some effort into raising money, a lot more effort than would have been expected from an inner city area. To simply say they don't deserve any help at all to supplement their own efforts is arrogant BS.

The reasons behind poverty in Britain are a lot more complex than who gets a few thousand pounds towards some new football changing rooms.

Personally I object more to the money thrown at inner city projects that fail within a few years for no return on the expenditure.

I'm working class and live in a deprived multi-cultural ethnically diverse area of London.

I haven't received my Lottery funded grant to provide me with thinking capabilities because some bast@ard group in Weybridge has a new croquet lawn.

I will have to sell my sons and daughters to ex-Spetsnaz Russian gangsters now.

Whether you or I do or not doesn't change the fact that most other people in the world will see us that way. "Whites" are grouped together and discriminated against by law in the US. It would be silly for me to pretend this method of grouping doesn't exist.
