  • Keane and O'Brien are out for the June 8th match against the Faroe islands. Im gonna change my prediction from an Ireland win, to a 1 - 1 tie.

both the offense and the defense will be ravaged. those two lost points will hurt them immensely, and make it easier for other teams to beat them when they play a looser offensive style to make up for it.

    • Dude, it's the FAROE ISLANDS (which have a -12 in goal diferrential in 5 games)!

      • and 8 of those -12 were because of switzerland. so they have played the other 4 games of theirs pretty tight.

        • They lost by 2 to France and lost by 2 to Ireland the last time they played. I hardly consider that to be tight. And last time they faced off, Ireland should have won by at least double with the wasted chances.

The only 'tight' game they played was against Cyprus which was 2-2.

Ireland will take Faroe Islands, easily, matching, at least their 2-0 victory over them earlier.

          • no way - ireland played at home that game. have you seen the field in the faroe islands? its very small and tight, its uneven, and its right by the ocean so its very cold and windy. even the swiss, whom the irish havnt beaten in like a year, had a tough time (although we were missing a couple of players, but not really key ones.)

i listented to the game, and there were lots of funny bounces, etc. i expect ireland to struggle, and to ultimately give up a late goal to the faroe islands, from which they will be unable to came back to take the lead.

            • From all that I've read about the prior game, Ireland dominated. And seeing as how the Faroe Islands has been beaten bad by every team except Cyprus (what a power), I see Ireland wiping the floor with them.

i've seen the ground, it's funny as fook! the game I saw was against Scotland about two years ago, if they'd have had a half decent striker (ie good English 2nd division standard) they'd have beaten the Scots.

But yeah, the ground really is something to behold!

                • I think I saw the very end of that game against Scotland, more like 5 years ago. Must have been '99/00 actually (you'll see why in a bit...)

We switched over to it after the England match finished, Faroes were 2-1 down, Scotland weren't doing so well oooh he he he we thought. The the Faroes got an equalizer right at the end. We all jumped out of our seats and started screaming like crazy people in scenes very similar to the ManU European cup win in '99.

                  A great day.

I met a load of danes at a conference in Swizerland and we were getting (very) drunk in the bar and I was talking to them and a guy from the Faroes about it. He was amazed I'd seen it.

                  • I'm pretty sure that game was in the Euro 2004 qualifying, so reds4ever was probably right when he said that it was 2 years ago.

                    • I'm only going by what house I was living in at the time.

                      I've done some research.

The 2-2 draw was in 2002, but Scotland also drew 1-1 with them in 1999 which must be the game I remember.

                      Twice.

The best thing about the draw (and I don't remember which one now) was the following call to a radio station, make sure you read all of it:

Call to TalkSport Radio phone-in show ...

Presenter: We have Jim on the line who wants to discuss the Faroe Islands-Scotland game.

Jim: Thanks...er yeah. Just want to say it's an absolute disgrace. I mean we're playing probably the weakest side in world football and we can't do better than a draw.

Presenter: It was a poor result.

Jim: Poor result! Poor result! It's absolutely scandalous. The manager has lost the plot completely, he's got to go. I know we've never set the world alight over the years on the international stage but I can't remember things being this bad. It's the end for us. The absolute end. I can't see us ever recovering from a setback like this. We're a complete laughing stock.

Presenter: Look Jim. I know it seems bad now but there is still a long way to go. I can't see you qualifying for Euro 2004 but hopefully things will improve.

Jim: I never expected for a moment we would qualify. I don't mind that so much. We're not good enough. But listen, to not qualify is one thing, but to ... fail to beat a team like Scotland is a different matter. It's a bitter blow for everyone here on the Islands.

Yeah, I heard about that. Dunno how much it's gonna help - they need someone better in attack. Remember Diego Forlan who couldn't score a goal for the first 20 games he played? He was the top scorer in Spain this season. Damn it on a stick! Obviously he has some talent, United just never got it out of him.
