I´m sitting in a friends study. Nothing here but a lot of books and a computer (and some porcelain cats). And since there isn´t much to do in Sweden in the year 100 (the vikings won´t show up for another 700 years...) I think I´ll scare the natives to submisson with the books of Leo Trotskij in the bookshelves around me. After I successfully form a communist cadre I´ll rally all the natives/comrades and head for Rome, collecting new comrades as I go. Well in Rome me and my cadre will organize the working masses and overthrow the bourgeouis oppressors and form the Peoples Republic of Rome. And when that´s done I´ll send comrades to other parts of the world reachable and organize the working class there and so on...

        Cool!

I plan on having one too, with giant see-through tubes running through the entire house, and piranhas swimming in them. Or maybe goldfish.
The tricky part will be having enough wind generators within fifty feet.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

        • Terrific. I'm with stone-aged indians, probably a thousand or more miles away from the nearest civilization.

There's got to be some hallucinogens around. I could get whacked out of my mind and think I've conquered the world.

Its next to the station, on the wrong side of the tracks to me.

There's a Roman fort and villa at Lullingstone aswell. Plus the Romans had a lot of fun playing spot the Minotaur in Chislehurst.

Uh...distillation of wine? Pretty simple to make wine, by the way. It's been around for over 7000 years.

a)How are you going to distill it, if you're in the goddamn new world, surrounded by what I suppose are woods, and a chunk of your appartment?

                      b) you need a very good distillation - the amount of water needs to be very low ( not the Azeotrop, but more to that region than Vodka, I presume - Potassium Nitrate wouldn't precipitate in Vodka, IIRC.

                      • Distillation to 80% is easily accomplished even with a single distillation.

                        • The Native Americans have earthenware vessels, by the way. should be easy enough to get a length of clay tubing made.

Anyhow, I don't think that making a cannon is the smartest thing I can do with my time in the new world. Just pointing out that it can be done within a year or so if you put your mind to it...

                          • If we make it 50AD rather than 100AD, I'd hike my way south to the Iceni and betray Boudicca to the Romans, thus earning me fame and fortune with the Romans. Then if I really wanted to take over the world, I'd kiss ass to as close as I could to Emperorship. Otherwise, I'd just wander back to Rome and write poems.

                            • I've never actually attempted this, I must admit, but I see a problem with you distilling it in field conditions.

As to the concentration, I just wanted to say that your booze won't do.

                              • I've distilled alcohol before. It's very easy with a heat source, water supply, tubing and glass vessels. Makeshift ones would be harder in the New World. In Roman Europe or China the rightmaterials would be easy to come by, and you could make a very efficient still.
