  • The accurate way to do it would be via a waterbath to achieve the right temperature (or close to). As for distillation, well, that is going to be hard...you're not going to be able to have a fancy waterjacket but I am sure there could be a way to improvise...

    • When I did it I went by trial and error until I was just getting the alcohol to boil out.

      • I know that distillation isn't something complex - I've done it too many times myself in the lab . I just couldn't see you do it in the New World in the wild. WRT old world, I still see some problems - but that it manageable, true.

        • Much more interesting would be what someone like Lonestar (in the middle of a carrier battle group or something like that) could do.

          • Not much, witha 50 foot section of a carrier rapidly sinking beneath him...

              • Make it the entire carrier + battle group, and they could do a lot...

... until they ran out of oil

                • Isn't the carrier nuclear powered ? Then it's just go to the ME and dig up some oil.
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

                    • Nuclear carriers also have their own machine shops and libraries (computer and otherwise). They are basically floating factories.

The rest of the ships aren't. I'd love to see someone set up an oil-drilling operation using only the stuff available to a carrier battle group.

Plus, navigation would suck without GPS.

                            Not really...

Pretty easy to navigate to within a hundred metres, actually

                            • Only problem would be that your clock would be off, given time travel. Best to get a point of reference on nearest land mass, then reset clocks properly using this and a star fix.

After that, as long as skies were clear you'd be able to get a position fix relatively quickly on any clear night.
