Churches are not responsible for maintaining such separation; the State is. It would be a rare move indeed for the church to lose tax-exempt status, as pretty much anything goes as long as they don't start putting money in coffers of pols. According to AP reports, only 12 or so were excommunicated. The others resigned in protest. Not that it makes a difference in my book — what that pastor did was wrong, and his church should lose its tax-exempt status should an investigation prove he crossed the line of church/state separation.
