    • Oh well - the bright side is he's 78 years old so hopefully he will die soon.
Any views I may express here are personal and certainly do not in any way reflect the views of my employer. Tis the rising of the moon..

Look, I just don't anymore, okay?

In 1522/23, the Netherlands were part of Germany, the independence war still had to wait for half a century, and was fought against the Habsburgians more than agains the Holy Roman Empire, the language still was recognised as one of many German dialects, and so on. In other words: The differences were far minor than those between Germany and Austria nowadays. If you had asked him, if he was Dutch or German, he probably would have answered : "both, of course".

P.S. Don't you still sing in your National Anthem about being German?
Why doing it the easy way if it is possible to do it complicated?

Ehm, no, we were Habsburgian/Spanish then, not German. And Dutch has been distinct from German as a language since early Medieval times, though it's true that the local dialects in the east are Lower Saxon, so they have more in common with German than Dutch. But that does not mean that the Dutch states have always been geo-politically distinct from the German ones, as they fell under Burgundy rule (and before then they were largely independent, they were only nominally part of the HRE).

Urban legend Diets = Old-Dutch for Dutch, not German. It's no coincidence the English word is so similar...

                      • When he was working as head of the Inquisition he was the one who formulated the policy that women could not be priests and made it official policy to oppose gay marriage even if it is just civil unions. He was also quoted as saying that the Church's sex abuse scandals weren't real and that communists, atheists, people from other religions were making it up and feeding it to the media in order to discredit the Catholic church.

Just the man to tackle the Catholic Church's sex abuse problems.

I'm not sure about which was married but Laz reported about loads of them who were pedophiles. Ass raping little boys seems to be a solid Catholic tradition.

I can't help it if the truth hurts. There were tons and tons of pedophile Popes. The Church still has this problem and the current Pope is on record as saying the whole problem has been invented by communists, atheists, and Jews. Lovely...
