Is this somehow supposed to be an argument?
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

No, but these definitions are important to clarify that we are talking about the same things when we use the same words.

A pig embryo is an embryo at cell division. According to this new definition, what would we call a human being after cell division conceived in a petri dish?

Again, by your logic it would be OK for a pharmacist to refuse to give frigging painkillers.

                    • No it wouldn't. Where have I implied that? I thought this would move on to a more interesting discussion about significant uses. You can lead a horse to water...

                      • So what? It's a part of the job. You can't be a cop if you refuse to use a gun, even if that's not normally part of the job.
Tell me what then, is the purpose of a pharmacist. I'm very curious as to see what you say.

                        • Kuci:

The reason your argument doesn't work is because painkillers have a use apart from being used to euthanise people.

The pill on the other hand is different. You cannot separate the abortifacient effect from the other contraceptive effects, due to the chemicals involved. In fact, to remove the abortifacient effect drastically lowers the effectiveness of the pill.

Therefore, it does make sense to treat the two drug effects differently.

                          • AFAIK, that would be an embryo. I've always understood Zygote as being the very first cell resulting from the fusion of two gametes (the French words I'm using might not be perfectly mirrored in English). When cell division happens, after ca. 2 days, you have an embryo.

It is different only in proportion (i.e., a painkiller is largely meant to kill pain, not euthanize people). There are significant uses for the pill other than contraception.

In any case, the pharmacists? Stupid. Sure, it's within their rights, but I won't cry for them if they get fired. Do I agree with what they're doing? No. They're being paid for a service. They are in breach of contract; if they cannot provide a viable alternative that is acceptible to the other party, then they are in the wrong.
