No, treason for making war upon the South, violating the constitutional rtight to secede, blah, blah, blah.

Some year I'd like to have the Congress do an April Fool's vote to expel the old Confederate states. I'd love to see how these guys react.

If MtG reads this he'll be a Baptist overnight.

I find it strange the warped paths large groups of people take when they have too much time on their hands. After having recently spent time in an agrarian community that survives hand to mouth from the land and sea, I've come to wonder how we in the industialized world got from there to here. Also I've developed a deep respect for there. In some ways it's simpler, in other ways (for the locals), such as not being able to rely on the next meal being there, it's alot tougher.

I'm really homesick for the place. Maybe for the sense of place...

We can't do that it'd wipe out the U.S. military.

I believe the mock trial was held by the LU school of law. Kinda makes you wonder what's going to happen when these guys get out into the real world and get appointed to judicial positions. I mean it's not like there was any doubt aforehand as to the verdict. They do this mock trial of Lincoln every so often, and the verdict is always the same. Do we need a group of jurists whose idea of fun is running a kangaroo court?

I'm sure the Southern Baptists have a whole liturgy of supposed crimes the evil yankee war monger is supposedly guilty off which have been passed down from generation to generation.

Let us not forget that the Southern Baptists broke off from the American Baptist church because the American Baptists had the nerve to say that Slavery was immoral and should be outlawed. The Southern Baptists are the Wahabists of Chrstianity only they blow up family planning clinics instead of fly planes into buildings.

Look at the legal system in this country. When we find someone guilty of a crime he's sentenced to a posh prison with three square meals a day, cable TV, conjugal visits with and weekly money to pay for them. If you're going to try to deter crime in this manner one really needs nutball judges, just to complete the picture.

I wonder where the term 'kangaroo court' came from, and why.

Seems a bit of a broad brush... are there no good southern baptists? Sounds a bit too much like me when I talk about the French to be realistic. Maybe 25 years ago I visited a baptist church in Gainesville Florida with some friends who went there religously. Good folks, not at all racist wackos, just wanted to worship with other believers...

So you're saying that we need jurists with some real hard core prejudices to make the legal system in this country work?

Maybe the meaning of the term kangaroo court is that the court "jumps" to a conclusion.

                        • Last week Liberty Baptist University held a "mock trial" for Abraham Lincoln. Care to guess the verdict?
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

                          • Conjugal visits for prisoners I vehemently disapprove of. TV too. Can they at least block everything except court TV and perhaps news?

I'm pretty sure I have ancestors who were Baptists in the south, one that I know of was a preacher. It would be nice if I could think they were good ones, but it doesn't seem likely. I think I have plenty of ancestors who owned slaves, it would be nice if I could delude myself into thinking they all treated them relatively well, but I have no real reason to think that.

I think prejudice against religion is barely less irrational than racism. People choose their religion, at least sometimes. And Race does not tell you so much what to do.

Nobody's perfect, there are honest and sincere people in pretty much all religions, Just about everyone believes some things that are right but also believes in doing some things that are wrong, whether they know it or not.

                            • ust tell him on the sly that you're really doing undercover work for the Baptists. That usually works. Or, tell him you became a Catholic because the people in your old church were too contentious. He can't argue with that without proving your point.
No, I did something even better.

Scored a point in my favour, since he was in error as to the teachings of the Catholic church.

Told him, he should read up for himself, if he wanted to understand what the church tought rather than listening to me.
