There must be some reason why so many civilizations and groups accross time and throughout the world developed some sort of religion.
That's a very interesting question. Why did every culture develop a religion, why do they all believe in a divinity? After all, atheism is a fairly new thing and its definitely not for everyone. There are probably thousands of anthropological, sociological or psychological theories trying to explain this.

*blink* Wow, 41 secular/agnostic/atheists? Never knew it was THAT high in Apolyton, though I'm not suprised.

I picked other; I have my own unique religious beliefs, though it does tend more towards secular/agnostic/atheist, I guess.

Ah, an homebrewn religion. But since people are lazy, most homebrewn religions can be summarized in one statement: I believe in something but I don't know what

A bit Protestant here, Lutheran Evangelical.

I also share Asmodean's way of looking at it wrt. to values.

I predict spiritual belief will become more important to me as I grow older, or should I say even older.

WTF? I was referring to scene in The big Lebowski. I don't see what nihilism has to do with nazism. According to the Oxford dictionary nihilism is

the rejection of all religious and moral principles.
The Nazis comitted the worst attrocities. But does that make them nihilists? I don't think so.

Oh yeah, I remember that. Isn't that a quote from John Goodman's character? I haven't seen that movie for years.
