why should parents be forced to spend money supporting their children doing stuff they dont' support?

Depends on the pet. 18 if it is something dangerous, less if it is a rabbit or a frog or something mostly harmless.

My take is that some things are fine for all, others ought ot be banned, period.

Only one exception:

1- Leave full-time education- People shouldn't be able to leave unless they graduate high school. H.S. dropouts often end up being net drains on society and are frequently jailed or institutionalized anyway.

No age limits

It's not like we're going to do away with driving exams.
5- Have sex.
6- Buy porn.
7- Appear in porn in an obvious state of physical arousal.
8- Get married.
Sex shouldn't be stigmatized.
4- Work a 12-hour shift down a coal mine.
9- See front-line service in the army.
13- Have a credit card, personal loan or mortgage.
14- Adopt children.
12- Become President.
Once again, there will still be other limitations.
11- Vote.
While there's the problem of "double votes", I'm fine with that as people with children have a bigger stake in the future.
15- Gamble.
The earlier the problem is discovered, the better it can be treated.

The correct answer to all these questions is "one year younger than me at any given time", except for 16, where it's "one year older than me at any given time" and 5 and 7, where it's 16.

Why are you against (shot)gun ownership? And how do you feel about ownership of livestock and steeds?

Security issue, do more harm than good. I believe society should provide with security, not the individual. Livestock and steeds are alright since they are for the most part not dangerous.

WHilst we may agree on age 'rights' for certain activities, what obiligations also come with these activities. If I own a gun because I am over the 'age', what other obiligations do I have? Do I need to attend a gun safety course and be a registered fire arms owner? If the later is true then any discusions about age limits is merely about trying to pin down a moving target.

Hypothetically, if the age of consent ifor sex and to buy porn is 16, does this give a 16 year old the right to abuse there younger siblings based on what he or she has seen?

Here goes mine. At some point you've got to have a bureaucratic stamp of approval on your adulthood, so it might as well be 18. With that caveat, these are the lines I'd draw.

1- Leave full-time education.- I'd be prepared to see this drop to 14, but only if kids leaving before 16 are on strictly regulated employment combining work with academic or vocational training- with continued employment being conditional on getting decent grades. Tying their wages to the education might get the little ****s working harder on their books. Failure means a swift return to school.

2- Drive a car. It's 17 in the UK, and I'm happy with that.

3- Drive a heavy goods vehicle or bus. Tied to a minimum 5 years of holding a clean licence, gives us a minimum of 22.

4- Work a 12-hour shift down a coal mine. 16. Any younger and they'd get notes from their Mum asking for them to be excused from PE due to their silicosis.

5- Have sex. These "peer group" things sound OK. I'll go for 14, providing there's no more than 2 years between them.

6- Buy porn. Pffft. 14.

7- Appear in porn in an obvious state of physical arousal. 18, to stop the precocious little dears getting exploited.

8- Get married. It's a contract. 18.

9- See front-line service in the army. 18 again, no matter how much they need a good, firm shooting in the face.

10- Own a 12-bore shotgun. Yup- 18 again.

11- Vote. I wouldn't like to see anyone turning adult for a government they hadn't voted for (I didn't get to vote in a General Election until I was 21). That gives us a minimum of 13 in the UK, and 14 in the US.

12- Become President. 18. They have to be nominaly adult, even if (in the case of certain US presidents) they clearly aren't mentally adult.

13- Have a credit card, personal loan or mortgage. It's a contract. 18.

14- Adopt children. Nominally 18, but still subject to the usul vetting beyond that.

15- Gamble. 18.

16- Get executed. 850.

17- Buy a pet. Like a Pit Bull or a Python, or something. 18, for the sake of parents who don't want little Lavinia coming home to their semi with a pony.

Age limit doesn't really apply. If you allow the death penalty, it should be after rehabilitation has failed, and clearly it can't fail until someone if of an act to willfully act. However this is a case when a psychologist (or team of, preferably), as they do now, has to make a call about rehabilitation.
