  • I am a school leaver with no qualifications

Just for the hell of it I decided to see what the Royal Navy had to offer me. When I clikced on Opportunities is provided me with a list asking me where I was in life to give me a general idea of what I could be. The list ranges from "I am a school leaver with no qualifications " to "Under 15".

Can you Brits please explain to me what a "school leaver" is? Is it a highschool drop-out, or someone who has completed thier 12th year of school and decided not to go to college just yet?

Had I known I could have joined the navy at 15 years and 9 months of age I would have left Barrow a lot sooner.

Im not even sure yet if an American can join the Royal Navy.

good question, I'd join the royal navy. They are allowed to drink beer onboard the ship

And they are allowed to have sex with each other

No post-16 qualifications if even that, ie, may possess GCSEs...the lowest level at which you can leave school education.

Wow, you're speaking English, and yet I cant understand you.

        Q. HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO JOIN FOR?
Ratings join on an initial engagement, or Open Engagement, which is for a period of 22 years from the age of 18. If you wish to leave during the 22 years then you are allowed to give 12 months' notice at any time after serving two years 6 months.

and I thought the US military tries to trap people.

Are you any good at the 'Americas Army' video game? If so, perhaps you could be an indestructable Delta Force/ Jedi uber Marine.

Mandatory education ends at 16 in the UK. You can leave schooling at that age or continue on to get A-level/vocational qualifications.
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.

Yeah, mandatory education here in the states ends at 16 too. Thats when you're allowed to legaly drop out without your parents going to jail for child neglect.

The key difference I suppose is that when I lived in the States and Canada, people who left highschool before graduation where, well, dropouts. They just seemed to fall out of social circles because so much is highschool based. In the UK, it's far more culturally acceptable (if, imho, shortsighted) to leave at 16 and join the work force.

I met the Chief of our Navy a few years ago. He joined the Navy as a midshipman at the age of about 12 Very impressive man. He had been in the Navy for more than 50 years.
