I dont really know how to say this but all patients that come in for treatment are looking for sympathy. The are sick they want to be sympathized with and thats what healthcare workers are supposed to provide along with treatment. The non compliant patients and family i already mentioned. But If youask me Do i feel for them after the fact(the patient) that is yes I do because I know they will be back and in worse shape.

@ BK and all I highly recommend that you find somebody you know in this field. It can save Your life one day. i.e. Worked with a doc in surgery doing a routine gall bladder removal (Lap Chole) The doc went in to get it. Howeverit wasnt there. Ex Rays were up on the board we can all see clips in the area were the thing was supposed to be hence the thing had already been removed. Me and two other nurses told him about the clips and it looked like the gallbladder had already been removed. We were informed that we were just piss ant nurses not mds shut the F*** up, we did and needless to say hes got no license to pratice medicine any more.
    Forgot the thanks to BK.

I have been cussed out by many surgeons and suspended many times for telling him to take a flying leap. As nurses we cant do a thing without a drs order, and if the order isnt there we have to wait for the doc to get back to us and call in the order. This goes for the smallest of small such as a glass of water, to an asprin, to whether the person can get out of bed.
I guess it´s not at all like ER or Scrubs in american hospitals?

It seems you shouldn´t work with people at all with that attitude... Whiners and difficult patients are a part of being a doctor, didn´t they teach you that at medical school? Or are you in just for the money?

I cant say to much about either show I dont watch them. I watched one episode of er once and laughed my a** off at which point I stopped watching. I think the only parallel er has with real life is the doctors and nurses jumping in and out of bed with each other. Not me of course. Id rather have a SO that i see alot. Tubes works in a hospital but hes not in the medical field hes maintance.

I think Doc's getting a bad rap here.

I don't interpret his statement as saying patients don't deserve sympathy. He's complaining about patients who aren't looking for treatment but just want someone to whine to and about patients who don't follow doctors' orders but instead decide they know better.

But still, IMHO doctors are part medical experts, part social worker/psych doctor (not really what I mean. I couldn´t find a word meaning "someone who you can talk to who is trained to talk to people but isn´t a psychiatrist. Counsellor, maybe?)

I hope I wasnt giving the doc a hard time. while it true what he said and me myself have come across patients of this nature. But I did say to that all the people seeking treatment are looking for sympathy, Other wise they would stay home and suffer. I also know that you feel as these folks are wasting your time in which in a way they are, however after you have seen these folks they usually go away having recieved the attention they need.

I know one doctor quite well, and at least 10 nurses, in just the group I tend to socialise.

I'm fortunate in the fact that I've got a good relationship with the doctors who oversee my health — from my family practioner to my dentist to my opthmalogist to my ear, nose, throat specialist.

I've been told that the best patients are those who are proactive in their care, hence I make sure my list of medications is always along when I go in for a visit, and I ask questions and run information by the docs that I've picked up from various sources (usually news articles, since that's my line of work) to make sure what I've read is accurate, and that there's no counter-indications for the stuff I'm taking (i.e. making sure a certain supplement won't cancel out the effect of, say, a blood pressure drug and vice-versa).

It's paid off so far. And that goes for the doctors' support staff as well — nurses, receptionists and whatnot. I've got decent relations with all of them ... I can only wish more people could say the same ... seems to be quite a few patients who aren't happy with their medical personnel and vice-versa. Such a situation benefits no one, IMO.

In closing, I've only had one trip in recent years to the emergency room, and that was for stitches to close up a rather nasty leg wound. I got in around 9:30 p.m. at night and didn't get out until 12:30 a.m., but I didn't have anything else to do.
