You know Caveman Games? Make a Lumberjack Games.

I just read a interview Brian Reynolds. The last question is about the next game:

N – Finally, what are the plans at Big Huge Games after the expansion pack is released?
BR – Some members of our team are already at work on our next cool real time strategy game!

I guess that means Lumberjack Tycoon is out of the qestion
This space is empty... or is it?

Brian, I like RON as much as the next guy, but please, come back to the light. We need the next great TBS, and you're the only one who can do it.

            Totally agree.

Please don't go to the RTSes. The drones need you. They look up to you.
I watched you fall. I think I pushed.

Well I hate the decision too, but alas from his perspective it is perfectly rational.

Are those damned real time games easier to write, or do they sell better?

Well at least the AI code doesn't have to be good, I think.

why do people here think RON is the first RTS Brian had a big role in? Does everyone forget Sid Meier's Gettysburg ??

I didn't forget SMG -- I just thought it was a step in the wrong direction.

SM's Gettysburg? I think I recall a game with that name a long time ago, but wasn't it turn based, or do I recall wrong?

They sell better... most people don't like to think when playing games... they only play games to get the fastest reaction time

No it was real time. as was its successor SM's Antietam (also published by Firaxis, but the engine modifications were subbed out to a boutique wargame shop, which then licensed the engine and applied it to the Napoleonic period) People forget its RT, cause its not a "typical RTS" you dont build units, instead they appear on the battlefield based on when they did historically. Basically its an accurate historical wargame - and it shows how good RT is for modeling that, at the the tactical (in this case grand tactical) level.

Its pauasable, so you have to time to think (and thinking is quite important - since the time scale is compressed, i find pausing (within limits) reasonable.

the boutique firm is Breakaway games, also a microprose spinoff, and the games they made after Antietam were "waterloo: napoleons last battle" and "Austerlitz".

So thats 4 historical wargames with that engine. Plus all the Paradox games. Plus every city builder. Plus the games made with the total war engine. Doesnt seem to me that a game has to be TB to be a "thinking mans" serious game. You just make your own turn, by pausing.

What's the point of running realtime on a wargame?

It works ok as a subgenre IMO.
