  • The Pope and CNN

Do the Pope and CNN have something in common?. CNN frankly admitted that it shaded the news on the dictator Saddam Hussein because he had threatened CNN's people in Iraq. We recently saw the Pope strongly oppose the war in Iraq regardless of whether it was UN authorized. Could he have done this because he feared reprisals against Christians by Arab dictators and/or Moslems not only in Iraq, but arcross the world of Islam?..

If the answer to this question is yes, contrast his stand here with his stand he took against the Communists in Poland right after becoming Pope. There he exhibited the moral courage to stand up for what was right. Today it appears that the Pope has lost both the vision of what is right and his courage. The CNN analogy helps explain why Pope Pius XII said nothing about the horrors that where the Nazi regime. The "courageous" Pope Pius XII appeared to have been more concerned about is "flock" and probably about himself than he was in defending the helpless against the monster Hitler. Now Pope John Paul II has shown similar " courage" "when defending this the defenseless of Iraq up against the monster/dictator Saddam Hussein.

I used to admire Pope John Paul II. But now I say, "Down with Pope John Paul II." He has besmirched his own legacy.

Yes, he should have kissed Bush's ass and issued a call for a crusade.

the pope was against the war in iraq because he honestly felt that the war did not meet the requirements listed for a "just war": the critical point at which our holy father believed it failed in was that a just war has to cause less suffering for the people than the status quo.

perhaps he was mistaken; however, his infallibility does not include world politics, only spiritual matters. he quite possibly believed that the war would create more suffering than if we left saddam in power; thus, the war would be unjust for that reason and that reason only.

as for pope pius xii, there were several instances where the catholic church shielded jews under the nazi regime. however, you also have to realize that pius xii was utterly powerless. nazis were occupying rome, he has little real world power, and the swiss guard is all but useless.

this is not to apologize for his behavior or condone it, but i find it slightly offensive that people frequently choose to slander the popes simply because they disagree with his policies.

I think you are being generous with your rating MtG...

Let's see... he asks a question on what somebody else is thinking... Then answers it with no information to base the answer on... Then points out how his answer is different then how the Pope has acted in the past... and says he no longer respects the Pope, because his made up answer is different than how the Pope has acted in the past... HUH???

I'm surprise the Pope is even alive. I think we should have a lottery poll on when he Popes off.

            No can do...

MarkG has made it very clear that he does not want "Dead Pools" or things like that on this site.

Ming, I think the Pope was concerned about reprisals against Christians in Iraq and elsewhere in the world of Islam if he took a stand against Saddam.

Ditto Pope Pius XII when Hitler was doing his number on the Jews, communists and Gypsies.

Ming... Both you and MtG were WAY too generous. 1.0 * 10^-1000 out of ten is probably the best rating I can give. Put that in your pope and smoke it.

Intriguing analysis Ned. I for one commend the Pope on his stand against the war in Iraq as an unjust war. Whether or not you agree with him, you should still admire him for his willingness to express what he sincerely believes.

Also, where are the WMD? At the time, Bush cited this as the primary reason for going to war. No one brought up the humanitarian concerns for the people of Iraq. Why should we judge the Pope for not addressing an argument Bush failed to raise?

He's the Pope. He's not supposed to urge people to kill other people. He's the vicar of the Prince of Peace, not some demonic Aztec war-god.
