How does Magallanes fit his theory?

you work on the assumption that light travels in a straight line .

knowledge is nothing but the general consesus belief's. we "knew" the world was flat a few hundred years ago. the greeks and egyptians "knew" the world was round thousands of years ago.

there are always dissenters, and it's ignorant and closed minded to call them wrong, when they can pick and choose portions of your own "science" to tear apart.

i'm not defending that the world is flat, i do believe it is a slightly oblate spheroid, i'm just defending the position that we don't really "know" anything, we just have well established beliefs

and when these beliefs are scientifically confirmed over and over again by indepedent experimentation, we shorten your statement from "I have a well established belief that..." to "I know that..." - saves time.

calling an african american person "nig" saves me time, but it's ignorant to do so (unless you want that whoopin')

Johnson's beliefs are firmly grounded in the Bible. Many verses of the Old Testament imply that the earth is flat, but there's more to it than that. According to the New Testament, Jesus ascended up into heaven.
                *sigh*

It's one thing to say the world is flat...

It's another to claim this as biblical teaching.

I wish he cited these passages so I could easily rebut, so instead, I'll just say that there is nothing to assume a flat earth in the Bible.

According to the New Testament, Jesus ascended up into heaven.

"The whole point of the Copernican theory is to get rid of Jesus by saying there is no up and no down," declares Johnson. "The spinning ball thing just makes the whole Bible a big joke."
Up is simply from our perspective that we see Jesus pass through the clouds.

Do we know where heaven fits into our current perspective on the universe? No. And the Bible does not even speculate on this point.

This is the next step from taking the Noah and the ark story "as is".
Not quite...both the universal and local flood interpretations can be defended from differing interpretations of the biblical passages. This is quite different in that this man does not know the least bit of what the Bible teaches.

True that. Else you would also have to argue that because someone says they threw a ball 'up' in the air that they implicitly believe the Earth is flat.

Of course! Everybody knows the Earth is Flat. We could only stand up straight at the North Pole if it weren't so. People would be sliding down to the equator and of into space.

For centuries, mankind knew all there was to know about the shape of the Earth. It was a flat planet, shaped roughly like a circle, with lots of pointy things hanging down from the underside. On the comparatively smooth topside, Europe sat in the middle of the circle, with the other continents scattered about the fringes, and parts of Africa hanging over the edge. The oceans lapped against the sides of the Earth, and in places ran over, creating currents that would pull over the edge ships that ventured too far out to sea. The space beyond the edge of the world was a dark realm inhabited by all sorts of unholy beasts. Fire and brimstone billowed up from the very depths of hell itself and curled 'round the cliffs whose infinite length jutted straight down to the darkest depths . . . .

Clearly, people can "defend" anything. But how valid are the defenses?

This is a but like Macrobius "proof" that the centre of the [spherical] earth is the centre of the cosmos. He reasoned that it would rain sideways in some places if it wasn't. And it doesn't, so it is....
