    MacTavish might leave Oilers
    WebPosted Thu Apr 24 18:12:20 2003

CBC SPORTS ONLINE - Head coach Craig MacTavish is considering moving on after his Edmonton Oilers failed to do so in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

According to Oilers general manager Kevin Lowe, MacTavish is reviewing his options.

"I have some concerns as to whether MacTavish will come back," Lowe said Thursday.

"I think that should concern the organization and should concern Oilers hockey fans."

MacTavish's contract is up for renewal, but Edmonton's early exit from the playoffs has him thinking twice about returning.

"I'm sure he will be here," Lowe said, speaking publicly for the first time since the Oilers' six-game, opening-round loss to Dallas.

"But we cannot be naive about the reality that perhaps he might not be here."

Mainly because MacTavish has grown frustrated by Edmonton's current lot in NHL life, namely, building a Stanley Cup contender on a shoe-string budget.

"I understand where he's coming from," Lowe said. "I have had similar feelings at times.

"Believe me, it has nothing to do with money and everything to do with philosophy."

Lowe refused to elaborate on what philosophy works best, yet insisted re-signing MacTavish is what's best for the burgeoning, young hockey club.

"He is a big priority for us," Lowe said of MacTavish, a former Oilers captain and valued on-ice contributor during the dynasty years.

"I am not panicky he won't be around, (But) there's some concern. I hope we can convince MacTavish this is the right place to be for all the right reasons.

"We've developed something good here and we're heading in the right direction and he's the guy to do it. For anyone to even question whether Craig MacTavish is the right guy for the job knows nothing about the game."

Since MacTavish replaced Lowe as head coach on June 22, 2000, the Oilers are 31 games over .500 (113-82-35-16), a far cry from the preceding decade which saw them go 70 games under.

"The main reason for that is Craig MacTavish has the ability to teach the game and coach it with the kind of compassion and understanding and care that only champions can," Lowe explained.

MacTavish, the eighth head coach in Oilers history, is one of three ex-captains hired to the post.

Lowe and Glen Sather were the others.

MacTavish played nine of 17 NHL seasons with the Oilers, with whom he won three Stanley Cups (1987-88, 1990).

MacTavish captured a fourth Stanley Cup with the New York Rangers in 1994.

A gritty centre and the NHL's last unhelmeted player, the London, Ont., native tallied 213 goals and 480 points with 891 penalty minutes in 1,093 games for the Boston Bruins, Oilers, Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers and St. Louis Blues.

After retiring in 1997, he spent two seasons as Rangers assistant coach before joining the Oilers in a similar capacity in 1999-00.

He will end up on Broadway. Bastards.

I saw we promote Charlie Huddy!

Or bring back Jari Kurri! He's been running gyms in Helsinki long enough...

Come on. Amonte didn't even score. Despite the last game it was a close series. If the Leafs had won Game 4 (which went to overtime) they probably would have won the series. Philly basically made less mistakes and that's why they won.

Then there's guys like Renberg with one friggen goal and -4. The defence sucked the big time, well below expectations and expectations were not high. Svelha finishes with a -5 and Kaberle ends with a -6.
They didn't play well at all. But one bad series doesn't mean we should trade them all. Renberg and Hoglund should go - they don't really contribute anything. Kaberle must stay - he's young and looks to be getting better.

Then there's Lumme who seemed to spend more time setting up plays for the Flyers then he did for the Leafs.
This clown is too old and should go. The Leafs should sign Glen Wesley and trade Renberg, Berg and perhaps Tucker for an elite defenceman. Bring Carlo whatsisname up and they should be OK.

Some of the guys have reasons for not playing great. Mogilny was injured, so was Nolan.
I reckon they were all pretty banged up.

But's that's no excuse for leaving Belfour out to die in the onslaught of the Flyers. Belfour was the only player who came out looking good.
Look it was a close series. The Leafs lost badly in the last game because they had to gamble and throw men forward.

The Leafs have to get rid of Quinn. He's had five years to put together a championship team and he failed miserably. He doesn't seem to grasp the concept that a team needs defence. A team needs a system. A team needs to rely on more than just smucking people (not that there is anything wrong with that, but there has to be more).
OK in the last five years the Leafs have gone out to either the conference champion or the Cup winner. That's not a bad record. Who do you propose to replace him with? Larry Robinson? It's obvious the Leafs need a top defenceman, but those don't grow on trees.

The worst thing about Quinn is his lack of management skills. Having a player quit the team in the middle of the playoffs shows that Quinn doesn't know his players. A good manager would have defused the situation. Okay maybe I should cut Quinn some slack. Corson is a certifiable nutcase. They had a team party after the defeat and he went to it! Talk about not getting the concept.
He quit for health reasons. I would have too in that situation. And he was right that Quinn should have played him instead of Hogwash. There has been a split between the Corson camp and the Roberts camp in the dressing room for a long time. That is now over.

Anyways, my hat off to the Flyers. They did a great job. Hitchcock has them performing as a team. Now if they can just teach Roman "Where's my glove" Cechmanek not to pull anymore dumbass moves they might have a chance at the cup, but that ain't going to happen.
They aren't that good. I think Ottawa may well humiliate them again. They don't seem to deal well with speed.

There were a few pluses this season.

Mogilny really came into his own this year. Belfour showed that he's still an elite goaltender and that he's better than Cujo. Tie Domi had a fantastic season and can't be put back on the fourth line again.

Say what?! Do you think Mogilny wasn't good before this year?!

Well, I've got to admit that I haven't watched any of the games cause ESPN isn't showing any hockey games this year in Hong Kong, but from everything I've read, the Leafs were terrible and made lots of mistakes. They were turning over the puck in their end. They weren't completing passes. Basic stuff. In most of the games, they didn't generate enough offence.

Yeah, Kaberle is young with lots of potential, even if he had a lousy playoff. Svelha could be traded for someone better.

You're right about Renberg, Lumme, Tucker (definitely) and Hoglund.

With all of the injuries, I start to wonder about the training staff. Are the injuries just bad luck or is it because the players are not being trained well. One or two injuries are par for the course, but the Leafs seem to have more than their share.

The Leafs had their chances at getting better defencemen, but Quinn wasn't able to pull off the deals. another reason for him to go.

You're right about all of that. Nolan will also pay off dividends.

The big question is whether Sundin should be untouchable when it comes to trades? I don't think so. I'd say trade him for a younger sniper and a great defenceman. Of course, it has to be a great trade, but it should be considered.

Agreed. Puck crossed the line prior to the net comingoff the moorings. Once again ESPN and apologist Barry Melrose show it's better to suck up than to tell the straight scoop.

Regardless the outcome was the same, great game and congrats to the Ducks.
