  • They have the "honour system" here too. Works great. In Alberta the people are honest, no need to pay lots of people to check everyone's stubs.

It's not totally an honour system though, transit cops do random checks for tickets and write you a $150 fine if you don't have one...(though the downtown core is a free-fare zone, you don't need to pay to use transit downtown)

Not that it matters to me, university students get unlimited access with uni ID...

That's a good plan, the schools here in London are doing the same thing. The bus pass is tied into the school fees. It comes in really handy at the end of the semester when the student loan money is running low.

        London, ON?
That's where most of my relatives live. I've never been more bored in my life aside from when I was in London. (Really)

Yes is it a bit staid around here but that suits an old fogey like me; my bar hopping days are long behind me now. It is getting better though, slowly. We now have a new 10,000 seat arena downtown that's drawing some good acts, and the downtown is showing some signs of life because of it. They've given up on trying to revive it as a commercial centre, and are focusing more on entertainment. Overall though, London is a town that's pretending to be a city. Maybe in a few years!

          • I liked Alberta when I visited too.
Yes. We are of high quality here. Well, northern Alberta, anyway... can't speak for those godawful southern Albertans, scummy dogs that they are...

My main complaint about Edmonton is the disgusting amount of pollution as you enter from the East (as I always do). Luckily, it tends to disperse itself over Sherwood Park (poor bastards), so I don't have to taste it in the city.

I found the honour system they use for the metro there (in Edmonton) particularly odd..
They do that in Vancouver, too, no? With the SkyTrain, I mean. At least, that's what it seemed like when I was there. Though maybe that was during the transit strike... But I think I'm right. Anyone?

Yeah, isn't that what we're talking about? No one is standing there to rip your ticket, but a transit cop COULD request to see your ticket at anytime. Isn't that the honour system we're talking about, basically?

Only during the transit strike. They have stepped up inspections, although they still do not have turnstiles.

Having said that, I would take back some of my comments. Asher: You have the ability to excel in the Forces, it would create long-term benefits for you, and you could make an important contribution.

You have the ability to excel because you are intelligent and you seem to be a top-notch computer geek (or at least a lot of people here respect your computer knowledge). You're also incredibly pig-headed which means if you decide to do something, you'll probably end up doing it extremely well.

The tough part for you would be working in the Forces' environment. It's a great life, but not an easy one. Not everyone can handle it, or make the grade. Still, I think you're the personality type that can set goals and accomplish them.

The one downside is you would have to curtail your political comments.

You would get a lot from a four-year stint in the Forces:
                      1) You would learn a lot of leadership skills. The military is not about just giving orders. It's more about motivating people around you. The leadership skills would be invaluable if you later decide to start your own company.
                      2) Four years with the Forces would put you way ahead of someone who spent four years doing an ordinary job.
                      3) You would get a chance to work on some interesting stuff that you would never see in civilian life. The Forces do a lot of sigint that rarely ever gets mentioned.
                      4) The Forces don't get no respect, but people who serve in the Forces are well-respected, particularly by employers and venture capitalists.
                      5) It's a great community. The people are great. Your "boss" will treat you better than any civilian boss simply because officers are trained to lead, civilians are not.
                      6) You could make twice as much money by taking a civilian job, but money isn't everything. There's stuff you'll experience in the Forces that you would never see in civilian life. And after four years, you'll have more than enough time to be rich.

Anyways, give it some thought. The Forces needs brains like you, now more than ever.

I'd forgotten about that. Very handy when pub hopping around downtown. IIRC you only had to pay if you were travelling out of the downtown core. I also liked the fact that you can get around a sizeable chunck of downtown without going outside. It was a cold December.

Whenever I really hate you, something like this happens.

I admit you do make it sound quite attractive, but I honestly don't think I'd mesh well with the military. I've always been an extreme-pacifist in the real world (only hit someone once, and I didn't really think about it when I did it). I know a lot of the roles (if not most?) don't involve combat itself, but the atmosphere of the military just doesn't seem to fit me.

                            • What I don't understand is why a country that chooses to pander to it's special interests and slap ridiculous tariffs on specific Canadian industries, thus causing Canadians to lose jobs, then comes crying that we don't put aside the feelings of the majority of Canadians and trundle off after them into a war that the most hawkish of us find difficult to justify.

I'm not anti-war. In fact, I'm mildly pro, but I see no reason for my country to be a lap dog to Washington.

The woman who called Americans "bastards" was out of line but other than that the Canadians have been very reasonable, and now the Bushies are burning that bridge like every other. I apologize on behalf of ordinary Americans.
